Trapping Larger Suckers
« on: Oct 19, 2006, 10:19 AM »
Each season I spend a lot of $$$ on suckers for tipping my bucktails.   I'm looking for any info on trapping larger suckers for use as cut bait.  What kind of trap?  What to use for bait?  Placement of trap?  Near outlet or inlet of pond or lake? ???

Fine a stream full of um, drift 1.2in balls of garden worms on trout size hooks, you can pool 20+ out of a decsent 12foot wide pool

You get a ton of size difference and species difference from 4-14in

we use to have sucker traps in the sugar river, they are about 16 X 16 X 36,with a (I think)a 2" funel on one end only, the other end opened to dump bait out.baited with dog food in wire basket in the middle of the trap. That's when sunapee was cut bait only.BB

Catching big fish is like winning the door prize!

I used to pick fiddleheads on the sugar river in early may, and we saw tons of suckers there every year. That water is crystal clear.
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

If you really wanted to experiment, you could use ultra light tackle for them, by using a sinker a small hook, and some worm.

I go net the buggers with landing nets when they run up the streams in the spring. Some get smoked for food, some get butchered for cutbait and are frozen. I have had poor luck catching the 6'' to 10'' size, perhaps they have not reached sexual maturity yet so they don't run ???
