Nils adaptor plate ?
« on: Dec 21, 2017, 07:45 AM »
So i bought the blue Nils adaptor that goes between the auger and the drill. Last night i attached it to both the auger and the drill . I spun it a few times and something did not look right , sure enough the metal disk had warped ! I could not believe what i was looking at ! The plate had sprung upwards . Its welded around the bottom of the plate ,no weld on top. Has anyone else had this happen ? Disappointed ,did not even have it on the ice yet.  For 50.00 i thought it would be better .

Is that the Kovac adaptor you have or something else?
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

As long as it keeps your auger from falling in the lake who cares?

I've got the Kovac adapter, but haven't had a chance to put it to use on the ice yet.  It seems like it'll work fine.  If you wanted to add a disk to it, instead of using the bungee cord, you could always buy the $5 Strikermaster disk https://www.fishusa.com/product/StrikeMaster-Cordless-Drill-Adapter-Flange

Or I've heard of some guys using the Frisbee Golf discs and drilling a hole in the middle.  They're a thick hard rubber compound, so supposedly they won't crack when they get cold like a regular plastic frisbee would.  You can even get light blue to match the Nils:  https://www.amazon.com/Discraft-Ultra-Sport-Fluorescent-Yellow/dp/B003CDIHIE/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1513875001&sr=1-4&keywords=frisbee%2Bgolf%2Bdisc&th=1

X2, both my 6in & 8in convertible's have some warp in the hole catcher. No big deal as long as it catches the auger from going down the hole, Right. Still functions and performs outstanding

I get that it doesn't affect the purpose of it, but it's still pretty shoddy of Nils to sell them like that when they charge a decent premium for their stuff.  Maybe I'm just being grumpy because we don't have ice here in Ohio and I want to play with my new Nils....

The heat from the weld warps them.  There’s almost no getting around it without a lot of fuss.  Doesn’t affect performance whatsoever.  It’s strictly a cosmetic thing.  ;).  My company specializes in welding.  Correcting the warping would add unnecessary cost to correct a meaningless flaw.

Gotcha, didn't think about the heat from the welding. Makes sense though.

Mine was perfectly flat until I spun it ? Maybe spot welding would be better and save on weld?

My orange Nils convertible auger also came with a "warped" ring but it still saved my auger bit from going to the bottom of the lake!
