Picking up garbage
« on: Nov 02, 2017, 03:40 AM »

This is why it is important to pick up after yourself and if you see garbage on the ice to help out our fisheries.
I believe there is a "pledge" here on Ice Shanty that supports that. I pledge to pick up and I have.

Agreed, nothing worse then seeing propane cans, bottles and other garbage on the ice. Even if it's not yours pick it up and take it with you. Some people don't have the respect that most of us do.

Agree with this!! Too many times, we come across someones party site, and left everything for others or the wind to take care of.  I always swear under my breath, but end up putting it in my tub to haul off.

Good topic, IW.

I got an early start in this back in the mid 40's.   Then the Boy Scouts, Military and a few years as a State Park Ranger.

A bit risky but, I've approached liter bugs, saying I'm here to pick-up their scattered garbage. They may even help. I offer empty bags and wish them good luck.  There's never been an unkind word ~ open-carry of the hog leg, ahhhh.     ;)2

Yeah, I agree!  Never understood that one...are people that selfish and ignorant that they don't stop and think for a minute where those end up??  They're directly polluting the resources they should care about most (based on the thought that they're out there enjoying their hobby).

But don't get me started on cigarette butts...I just think overall it's extremely selfish and inconsiderate how people have no qualms about just tossing them out the window, on the ground, etc.

End rant, sorry (kinda).

I've been pretty lucky, I fish where there's traffic, but not on lakes where there's a ton of people. My pet peeve (no pun intended) is dog poop.

That stinks --- including my own pack-in, pack-out trash, I always try to leave the lake with at least one more piece of trash than I brought with me.  There hasn't been ONE fishing day when I haven't been able to find at least one piece of trash.  If every fisherman/woman did the same simple steps, our lakes/streams would be much better off.
Flags up, gentlemen!!!

No doubt nasty, but at least that one is quickly biodegradable.

Dog refuse is just part of the equation where i live, but the worst is when you see the human refuse, toilet paper and all, in a half-drilled hole. Disgusting!

Biodegradable yes, but just one more source of excess fertilizer/nutrients our lakes don't need.
