Well, this one's got me stumped.  On another subject, does anybody know how to get the margarine out of the tub I bought, onto a slice of bread?  I'm trying to figure it out, but nothing so far.

Microwave for 30 minutes then pour liquid margarine onto bread.

You need to find yourself a 1/32 scale fully functional backhoe to get that margerin out. I don't want to have to make a thousand swipes with a butter knife.

You are overthinking this. if a scoop wont work, buy a couple gallons of water at the grocery store. Are they even $1 a gallon? Even cheaper, just fill old milk jugs from the sink if you have well water. Softened, or city water will kill fish. Its not as light as an empty cooler, but its dry.
Generally you  would not want to use tap water since it is often treated and would hurt the fish.

I would partially fill cooler and worry about topping off after you put your fish in. Then have a portable aerator also will help. Tight lines, Steve

Seriously I can fill a 5 gallon bucket with lake water in about 1 minute out of a 8" hole with my ice scoop. Hold the bucket at a 45* angle next to the hole and flick water out of the hole with ice scoop into the bucket. Any kind of pump is going to freeze and be worthless if below 32*.

Why have none of you great thinkers come up with the obvious solution ? Just get some dehydrated water. Water in its normal state weighs 8.33 pound per gallon. The dehydrated water weighs 0.00 pounds per gallon. When arriving at fishing station. Rehydrate the water by adding water  uh wait a minute.......... :o

Must be just that I'm an old lazy guy, but instead of figuring out how I'd fill a cooler with water while out of the ice in a day or two, I'd just plan on bringing my cooler
THAT I HAD ALREADY FILLED WITH WATER AT HOME!!!!

Scooping water out of the hole isn't any good.  That water is at the top and everyone knows that freezes first.  You have to get the good water that's down deeper, then you won't end up with a cooler full of ice.  I use the same trick for my truck radiator.  I wait until the coldest days of the year, find a stream that isn't frozen, and get the good non-freezable water from there.  Saves a bunch of money on anti-freeze.

geez, the guy asked a question. What ever happened to the "the only dumb question is the one that didn't get asked"? The guy was wondering if there was a better method to fill a cooler when out on the ice than dipping it out. Not for wise ass answers.

I use a 6" hole for fishing and a small coffee can fits nicely down it. I drill a small hole in the edge and attach a length of parachute cord so I don't end up accidently littering. I usually only need a few scoops but I'm not trying to fill a bigger cooler, just my little one for minnows and usually that is just to refresh the water and cool it off a little bit. The small drill pump sounds like a good idea. I've used them in very cold water and it didn't make the thing freeze up and fall apart or anything like that but they need a few drops of veg oil to lube them from time to time. Maybe a small boat hand bilge pump would do the job faster as well.

I ran into this exact situation Sunday.  Had to put water in a cooler for a 13lb pike.  I ended up using a half a Mountain Dew bottle and a 12 year old.

This thread is hilarious!!  Seriously though, marmooskapaul's suggestion about the bag is a good one.  Takes up no space, cost effective, and if you happen to find some weed out on the ice, you can safely package it in the baggie!

For a siphon to function, the exit must be below the level of the source liquid's surface.   So, no, it won't work on this planet.     :woot: ;)2

Drill a couple holes thru the ice side by side but don't go completely thru. Just enough for water to start filling the holes. Instant live well and no cooler needed.

What the- kidding me? Use your ice hole scoop, just tilt the cooler and go fast and you'll get a bit of water every time. I know the scoop has holes in it, go fast.
