Warm Boot Insoles?
« on: Mar 23, 2017, 07:43 PM »
I need the help from the folks who use cold weather clothing/accessories.

I'm looking for warm boot insoles to put into some new boots I just purchased, see here: http://www.vermontgear.com/1002645.html?fe_feedid=230&fe_code=1002645_dkearth-bossa_10-5&utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=CSE&utm_campaign=feedexact

These are the insoles that I had used for years in my old boots: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MFA1KFW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1Q2QF3DE1NA3I&coliid=I6UTCBCTP2D0W&psc=1
These worked well for my needs so I was wondering if they are still good for warmth or is there something better out there in the market that I may be interested in?

Thanks for the help.....
Steve

I haven't used them, but Pedag makes some interesting insoles.  They are wool and contain other materials (aluminum reflective layer, cork, etc) depending on which model you get.  Let me know what you get and what you think of them ... I'd like to find some better insoles for my Cabela's hiking boots that I wear ice fishing quite a bit.  They are very warm for a leather hiking boot (1200g), but it would be nice to have a little extra insulation between my toes and the ice!

What are you using now for insoles Crayfish? The ones that came with the hiking boots originally?

Yes, stock insoles.  I wasn't originally planning on using these boots for ice fishing so I never looked into upgrading the insoles.  They are warm boots, though, and much better to walk around in than my Baffin Titans.  Now that they've been "repurposed", I'm going to look into upgrading the insoles.

Reflectix duct insulation cut to fit, and put it under the stock insole.

I got a pair of Yaktrax insoles from Cabela's for sitting on stand hunting, they work quite well.

Vrmontrout, do you use those Yaktrax insoles by themselves or do you put them under the original insole that came with the boot?

Thanks, Steve

And Crayfish2: I'm not using these boots for ice fishing either so I found that a bit amusing but they sure are comfortable suckers! And light weight too!

I wore them for the first time the other day to clear some snow and then wore them inside for 3-4 hours they were so comfortable.
When I took them off, my foot/sock wasn't damp or wet nor was the inside of the boot.

I am quite pleased with these boots and once I find a better insole, these will be great for my needs around the house. They may even work well for ice fishing if I ever get to go again with them.

I put them in over the top of the regular insoles (Lacrosse Burly's) for a few days but then took the originals out because the fit was pretty tight.  My feet always get cold and they didn't with the insoles so I give them a thumbs up.  Actually used them ice fishing for the first half of the year until I got some new Muck Arctic Pro's and feet never got cold.  I also have been buying a size larger in boots the last few pairs I've bought and that seems to help quite a bit as well.

Here's a trick I learned from a dairy farmer in the Islands who did a lot of ice fishing.

He went to his local butcher and asked for a pair of the foam plates that meat is placed on before its shrink wrapped.  The same size that a big London broil steak you would buy in the refrigerated bins in the meat section.  He would cut the foam to the insole size of the rubber boots he wore working on the farm.  The same boots he would use for ice fishing.   You might want to get a felt insole to go over the foam.  It depends on the thickness of your socks and room in your boot.

Give this method a try.  It doesn't cost you anything and the grocery store butcher will give you the foam plates.

All good tips indeed folks!

I'll look into these ideas and others and post back after I've make my decision, and have used a few times with what I chose.

Thanks again....
