Island Pond walleye fishing??
« on: Feb 03, 2017, 04:51 PM »
???  Island Pond received a walleye stocking of 14,000 in 2014 and was scheduled for the same each following year.  Anyone having any luck for these fish which they hoped would be legal size this year??

Only fished it once and that was 2 years ago.  Kind of blind going into it but did not catch a walleye.

Were the walleye 2 or 3 years old already?  Because if not, they will only be 12-15" long by now.

When they first started stocking walleyes in IP it started to get pretty good. We started to catch 5lb fish around 2005. The problem is around 5 to 4 years ago people were slamming them and everyone was keeping them. I know one group of ice fisherman that kept around 70 that year, not to mention the campers that took out a bunch too. They didn't manage it well. No slot limit or anything. They quit stocking for a couple of years but started up again. Now all you catch are juvenile walleyes and possibly a left over trophy. There is some natural breeding but not much. Back in the 60's walleyes were thriving. The only walleyes that I've seen caught this year were 15 in and under. If they implemented a good slot limit and possession limit I think they could do very well. Time will tell...

The first stocking (14,00) will be four years old this coming Sept,2017.

I caught a couple of nice ones last summer from the canoe, but I really have been trying to stay away from walleyes when they're leading up to spawning season because I want there to be more of them.
May the fish be with you.

Randy
