Tips for lighting up my shanty
« on: Jan 04, 2017, 08:34 AM »
Just bought a Polar Bird 4T shelter and wanting to try the evening bite.  Any tips on what to use to light the tent?

I use a set of LED bar lights in my Clam, a rechargeable lantern, and a battery head lamp.  It's plenty of light.  I put tin foil on the back half of the lantern globe to keep the light out of my eyes.

Head over to www.hawgoutdoor.com they are half the price of clam light bar plus they are ready to go. Just strap it to where you need it, it comes with the straps, and plug it into your battery. I ordered to of them and they were able to send the second one to me already to connect up with my first one. They can also sell you a dimmer to go with it. They are super bright, and have shipped pretty much the same day I ordered.

I'm trying to find the maker of mine, but there isnt a name on them.  They were really inexpensive.  I don't think I paid $20 for all three.  I've had them for 5 or 6 years I think

Led lantern, led strips, or headlamps. Always a head lamp for sure. I don't use propane/fuel lanterns, just a pain in the butt dealing with fragile mantles.

I've always used the small colman compact propane lantern.  Actually when I'm not using my flip shack (which I prefer not to if possible) I pull a strike master glide lite sled (modified of course) with a crappy caddy sitting on top of the bucket which has a indent perfect for the propane fuel tank for my mini lantern.  the hole rig lights up enough to see everything I need without the glare of artificial LED lanterns.   And it does give off good heat in a flip shack.

I just installed 2 Light strips in my Jason Mitchell Thermal, plus a charging port for my Cell phone... We all know fishing can be slow and we entertain ourselves by being on our phone... Now I don't have to leave the warmth of my Tent to charge my phone.
total cost 30.00, about an hour to install both..

I just got the Clam strip to put in my flipover. By far the best I've had. But always have a headlamp also for tying that damn 2 lb. test.

I have tried many options:  lColeman lantern, several truck dome lights, battery lanterns, head lamps, etc.  couple years ago I bought the Clam LED light bar.....The Best investment I ever made.  Plenty of light...I even think I tied a jig on 2# line in it already.  Highly recommend these units.  I bought a 1.4Ahr battery to run it. It's small and light enough and will run the lights for 3 hours+.  I do pack a head lamp for tearing down and the walk back to the truck...gotta have that!  Good luck and stay safe out there!

I LED reverse lights for a semi trailer. Took a little backwoods engineering to mount them. Some epoxy and 3/4 in conduit clamps. I have them wired to a spare battery on a switch. Every  now and then I forget to turn them off and when I flip the shack open after 4 or 5 days the lights are still on but pretty dim. ;D

Go big or go home.  Use a trolling motor battery and couple hundred watt power inverter, and a couple 60LED light bulbs like you'd put in your lamp in your living room.  Find the all plastic ones.  They can take the abuse. No shortage of light or power/longevity to run them.  With ice as smooth as it is I don't chince on the battery.   I bring the big one and 4 bulbs.

I had to quit using propane lanterns in my shack. They seemed to produce too much carbon monoxide combined with a buddy heater. I now use an LED lantern. I will upgrade to the LED light bar when I purchase a new shack. By the way, new member here. I hope to contribute some useful info here as I have picked up good info from other members.
