Anyone fish Arrowhead Lake?
« on: Jan 11, 2017, 07:57 AM »
I've seen a few people on it this winter but in the summer the boat ramp was packed every day. I'm assuming it must be decent fishing. Anybody fish it and know what the general bite is?

Ice fished it a few years back.  Mostly the wider lake part towards the heart of Milton, not the 104A side.  Perch were pretty small. Got a jumbo or two by the island.  I've tried a couple of times back towards the 104A side with not much luck either.  Be careful with your auger, lots of shallow spots.  One hole I drilled had a slush fest in the water column, couldn't even fish the hole because of buildup underneath the ice.  Caught a couple 10-12" marble eyes open water fishing probably 7 years ago as well as a couple pike.

I iced fished it with tip ups once about 3 years ago on the 104A side.  Got on by the bridge where guys fish in the spring.  Was in 5-10 fow and did not get a single flag.

Since I was by myself I did not want to venture to far in unfamiliar territory.  The water moves there and made me a bit nervous.

I know there is a variety of species in there.

The closest flag up may be the one that is behind you !

I live close to it, and yes I've fished thru the ice there. Have to be careful because they regulate the water level at the dam, and you'd be surprised that the water level can drop right underneath you in minutes...sketchy.
Great for summer canoe/kayak, but if boating have to stick to main channels. Great up in the river  - train bridge to rapids for small mouth bass.
Fish tend to run small, lots of dink yellows, pike are below average 27" longest I've ever caught, eyes are small too, almost always a throwback size. Lots of worms too.
I've heard rumors of crappie, but I've never caught one there...lived there 8 yrs and never seen one.
Ice is plenty thick now, safe for walk on and ATV, but water moves fasts underneath, and wouldn't recommend ice fishing near train bridge, if you do, be prepared for tons of slush in your hole, sometimes so bad you'll never get it cleared out. But if you're inclined to hoof it, then head towards the back towards the campground is okay once you get past the very shallow debris areas and can get onto one of the splinter channels.
Good luck & be safe! That place changes fast and has gas pockets like the sandbar shallows.

I've found lots of big perch in there, but they were incredibly wormy.    Definitely be careful and check ice thickness.  Last winter it stayed thin in the channel longer than the shallows.  There's current.

I fish it a lot in the summertime and have caught a variety of species. Crappie, Blugills, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, LMB, SMB, Pike, Pickerel, big and small perch, Golden Shiners, Bullhead, Bowfin. I even think that I saw a rainbow or brown trout surface right in front of me while fishing from shore late this fall. I have only fished it through the ice three or four times and it seems to be really slow on every outing. I went two weekends ago and tried everywhere. Out by the island, the hump in the middle (See Navionics), etc., and only caught a half dozen 8-11 inch perch and a pound and a half Largie. Good luck, it's a BIG "Party" lake with lots of four wheelers, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, and even small cars racing around near the "boat launch"/access on the South end.
Perch bait- a small minnow that can have big results in the ice fishing game.  :icefish:

Great info guys. Appreciate it greatly. Not sure I will take the time to fish it this winter,  (I'm already a pre- sketched out fiaherman), but may have to hit it come spring.

They dropped the water level yesterday and the ice sagged at least 6"
Saw a pair of vehicles parked, assumed they fished the backside.
Not sure I'd venture out there with the water level fluctuating so much and the wind/warm temps these few days, the ice shifting because of the water level...again sketchy...

Mudchuck,  My buddy and I fished it on the north end Wednesday.  The water was very low.  The main channels were  visually obvious and thus had a pretty strong current.  We fished the edges of the hole where the three rivers come together.  Stayed until dark and got no walleye.  We did get two dozen perch but they were small.  I have fished this lake a lot.  It is either a hit or miss kind of place to fish.  Always bring a chisel and check the ice as you go near the channels.

Years ago i used to fish it.i used to access the
Main lake(dam) from the then new developement
At the end of woodland dr.its now residential.
Used to catch lots of big perch on the hump.
After ice out the little backwater by the narrow
Bridge on 104a used to be a popular pike
Destination.folks would fish from shore.
I have seen monster fencepost pike pulled
Out of there...above the highbridge was always
Good for a few walleye in the spring.
As well as smallmouth in the rapids.ive caught
Lots of walleye under the highbridge.
Springtime used to bring dozens of folks
Out at night there for bullpout.the lake has very limited
Access .but it has a very  diverse species selection.
Because of the limited access i dont fish it anymore.
There are cleaner lakes closer to me.

I have heard of some large pike in the teens coming out of there however, I have never been the lucky guy.  When I was a kid in the mid 80's 1/2 the walleye we caught were keepers, some 4-5 pounds.  Now, if you keep one 18" for every ten you catch you are doing well.  Any suggestions on fishing Champlain for Walleye?
