Slow snow
« on: Jan 09, 2017, 09:16 AM »
Went out Saturday before storm.Had a good day but called  it quits early1:30pm. The sleds felt like someone filled them with concrete. Had to be the most unslippery snow I've ever seen. Couple other guys I spoke with felt the same. Literally felt like dragging sled backwards plowing through the snow.
So why was it that way?
Sunday was a lot better but still easier in others tracts.

So it wasn't just me! Oh my GOD it was horrendous pulling my ski box! And it wasn't the depth of the snow, box is 12" off the ice and its a plastic box! I said the same thing too, "its like pulling a box of cement with no skis! I ended up using my sled Sunday.

What kind of wax?  Ski wax?  I was thinking about lubing up the bottom of my sled as well as my smitty sled.  I was going to use ski wax, obviously, for the smitty but was hoping to kill two stoned birds with one kind of wax.

wax is wax (in a pinch that is), but ski wax or "sex" wax (surfboard wax) is designed for more friction and more glide.
Sure, a candle will do in a pinch, but it will wear off faster.

Dry powdery snow is like loose sand and the flakes create a lot of drag, whereas wet snow packs down and creates a firmer surface to glide over, once you get moving.

I've heard of using armor all on the sled, never tried it. I make sure my sled isn't above freezing when it touches the snow, and I check to make sure there isn't any ice built up if it suddenly starts pulling hard. Black sleds warm up in the sun, and there's usually water around the holes when they're first cut or if there's a bunch of snow on the ice it gets turned to slush.

I spray mine with a quick detail wax like the meguiars . seems to help and gives the sled a nice shine .
