Shipping a gas auger
« on: Jan 05, 2017, 11:55 PM »
I have a used ice auger that I was thinking about shipping to my brother. I was wondering if I drained the gasoline from the engine if I would be able to ship it? Anyone ever tried to ship one before? Would UPS, USPS, etc. accept something like this if it had fuel in it before?

Best to check with who/how you plan to ship.

Best get all odor of gasoline out. Completely !  I they sniff gas, you'll most likely be taking it back home.

Drain the lines, tank and carb.  Then store in a room temperature until all the smell is gone.

And, it may never go away.  Bummer !

Good luck.    Let us know how it goes/went.    ;)2

X2  Also if you tell them it was ran at one time they'll probably hit you with a hazmat fee.

As long as it's drained it's fine.  Tell me what it is and that it's been fully drained and they won't have an issue.

I have shipped my powerhead before.........twice to strike master. It cost me around $50. I shipped it through the ups store. There was no hazmat fee, they wanted all fluids out of it was all. Best to have your own box to ship it in. It cost me a little more because I had them box it up for me. Hope this helps you.

No problem shipping, just drain gas and you are good to go.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll take it to UPS and have it shipped.

There is a law about shipping items that had gas in them, I tried to buy a used fuel pump online a while back, it depends on if they disclose that to the shipper if you get my drift...

its not illegal, you just need to tell them it once contained gasoline, but is fully empty.  They may inspect it.  If its found to contain liquid gasoline it must be labeled "Flammable Liquid" and shipped Hazmat Class III.
