Rain in the forecast
« on: Dec 30, 2016, 09:25 PM »
So I'm out of the country and I've been following the weather report since I'll be back on the ice in a week. I started to lose hope when I saw heavy snow in the forecast but it should all melt from Tuesday to Thursday. After that, it is supposed to drop to below freezing temps for an indeterminate period of time. IMO, it should hold up and we may have a good 6-7 by the 8th due to the sudden refreezing but then again, I haven't seen the ice in southern NH since Christmas Eve so I don't know if it has started to melt or become unstable at the edges. What are your thoughts?

The pond I trap bait in lost some around the edge, but once I got on (after checking thoroughly with my chisel), I was glad I had my auger. This was the day before the snow. You should be all set in a week, but it's never a bad idea to check with your chisel if you're not sure. I'm sure more people will have more concrete reports on and after the 1st.

I took my uncle and cousin from Florida out on the ice yesterday in greenfield and found 5 - 8 inches or more consistently throughout the lake. Granted it wasnt a huge body of water, it seems as though only the edges of most places lost any significant ice. as always check before you walk but the ice should be plenty thick upon your return !

Critta, that's good to hear! This snow will certainly help then. 404, I drove by massapoag in Dunstable a couple hours before I left for the airport and saw the edges eroded as badly as they would be in March although it looked solid otherwise. I think  you're right saying that it should be good when I return because this year is shaping up to be a lot like the winter of 2013-2014, which means we should have good ice till mid to late March and good fly fishing until July, which excites me more  ;D. How did you do yesterday?

With the exception of a little slush(although its mostly hardened up), all the southern lakes Ive been on this week have been fine. Ive been out with the quad everyday with no problem. Ice held surprisingly well.
