So close but...
« on: Feb 11, 2006, 09:28 AM »
Just checked the ice on one of my ponds. A good solid inch of ice and the snow that was on top has melted and frozen. I was able to stand on the ice next to the pier. Seems like it will take my weight but one inch? I think I'll wait. Startng tomorrow night it's supposed to drop into the teens for a couple nights so maybe that will add another 1/2 inch?

We will warm up for a couple of days next week but then it's supposed to get cold again. Hmmm...

So close but... ::)

It's suppose to rain here in Northwest Indiana, I seriously doubt any of my spots will be hardwater fishable until December (hopefully). Good Luck on your pond, hope you get enough ice to fish it!! Crappie rob.

Went by Lake George today. most of the southern section  (boat laaunch side ) is skimmed over althought there is still open water between thw launch and the bait shop.
Ran by Long Lake as well and there is way more open water there. I was kind of expecting it to be better than George..... but no way.
Looks like a road trip is going to be in order before too long. Can't take much more of this.....

WORK is that annoying time between FISHING TRIPS

It's 16 degrees this morning in Ligonier. I should have made more ice this morning on the pond! I'll be checking it STAT! If it's 2 inches I will be out on it today very caustiously checking as I go!  I DO NOT WORK ON SUNDAYS! So I sure hope I can do some ice fishing!

If It's not 2 inches I may set the Clam Guide I just picked up yesterday on the pier and hope for the best!

Looks like Tuesday through Thursday it will be above freezing but after that the temps will drop again. If we get some snow just before that it could do some insulating for us which could help us out for those three days!

Knock on wood, knock on wood, knock on wood.

I hate to tell you guys but you many need to find a pond somwhere or fish channels for the rest of the winter. It may be the only way you can get on ice. I think it may be too little too late on the big lakes -- either that or head north although I was in southern Michigan on Friday and the big lakes did not look any better than northern Indiana. You'll probably have to head for at least central Michigan.

Checked the ice on the pond with calipers and a tape measure (yes I'm serious about this LOL).

1 3/4 inches of solid clear ice with a dusting of snow on top. No wet spots. I can support myself next to the pier on it and even with stomping the ice holds. However water slowly comes up from the hole around the hole and saturates the snow. I think I could get away with fishing as long as the thickness is uniform  in the pond. But I'll fish off the pier and hope to pick some fish up.

I can break ice next to the shore but it holds farther out. Must be the fact that the ice is floating and doesn't have a side to it that is not supported as in next to shore.

Taxadermist.....those ice conditions you report sound like the exact conditions we fished on yesterday. I wouldn't be too worried. once past the shoreline we were pretty good. There was a lot of flexing and a lot of crackling and water comming out of the hole but we managed all day.

Checked the ice this morning on the pond. 1 7/8 inches of good clear solid ice. Come on ice!

If we can just get through Tueday through Thursday without losing any or much ice we may actually get up to 3 or 4 inches. Looks like the weekend Arctic outbreak will be the real McCoy this time.

I'm doing pretty good off the pier and found out the perch are attracted to the lantern light, but I want to be able to move around the pond with my new Clam and there is an area near the middle that has bigger bluegills in the weedbeds.

Yogi,
I've been fishing the last 2 days with no success, the ice is limited,I did loose a little walleye at the hole today, trying to get my camera and a head shake and the little booger was gone,it was only 10"-12",the wind was howling about 25mph it seemed like, but I can tell ya this,it made a little ice last night,
