Homemade spud bar
« on: Dec 27, 2016, 06:57 AM »
So I've been looking at spud bars. I have two from my dad but they weigh a ton. Basically they are old spud bar/pry bars. At least 20 lbs each. I was thinking of a new one. I was looking at different designs and not sure which type to get. I was almost thinking of building one myself. Has anyone ever used railroad spikes welded together in a step formation maybe 3 wide and 1/4-1/2" steps welded to a piece of steel pipe or square tubing? I think it would work good. Any thoughts?

I have a homemade spud, the weight is 84 ounces.  Used to test the ice and open old holes.  1/2" cold-rolled, length is from shoulder to ground, with a 6" piece of car spring "stepped notched" and hollow ground before welding onto a ground flat or split, sawed into the 1/2" cold-rolled. The "tee-handle" at the upper end should be no longer than the width across the back of your fist and have rounded ends which can save cutting your face. Don't forget the wrist strap.      ;)2
