County Ice conditions for the 1st
« on: Dec 22, 2016, 08:31 AM »
With the 1st fast approaching I am wondering what the ice conditions are like on the fish river chain.  For the past 9 years going into camp on Square on or around the first we end up snowmobiling in on the road because of sketchy ice.  There has been years when once we get into camp we do some checking and can snowmobile across the lake.  Not last year. hahaha.  I am thinking that this year we might be able to get in right out of the gate by crossing the lake which is a much shorter ride in when your dragging gear.  I may be a bit optimistic but I am thinking there could be close to a foot of ice a week from now.  Just wondering if any of the county folks have thoughts on the conditions as I am heading up there on the 31st and will be there for a week.  I do have a couple contacts I will touch base with the day before I go but just curious what people think.  That is when my holiday season begins.  haha.  Thanks for any info

Portage Lake had 7 to 8 inches last Sunday when I put my shack out...I'm sure the larger lakes had less than that..

heading up this weekend (Monday)  to check it out, heard the square lake road is real bad with blow downs, we had a lot of heavy snow.  someone said it looked like a bomb went off,  lots of work to be done.   we're bringing a chain saw to clean some of the trail.

Cross will be fine. Probably square also but don't rely on others, make sure you check it. Square been locked up for ~5-6 days now. The rabbit trail is a great short cut but not if you're the first one through. Someone is certain to have cleared the road of trees by then.
It must be something in the water.

Thanks for the responses, its always a must to have something to cut up trees, Ive been in that rabbit trail before after a foot of heavy wet snow and it taken an hour to get through.  If anyone is in there in the next week and wouldn't mind keeping me updated through a PM that would be greatly appreciated, and if any of you would like to fish on Square that first week, camp can certainly make for a good ice shack and I don't mind the company.  Thanks again

6in. on eagle at the beach, long has same in most areas. cross should be more. square should have 6 in most areas. bunny trail will be full of blowdowns as should the side roads in blackstone siding going in. lots of snow this year but not much yet on the lakes as it snowed mostly before they locked up.
