Low visibility
« on: Dec 06, 2016, 06:35 PM »
One lake I fish ( average 15 fow ) with the deepest 35',seems to contain algae or some sort of suspended green / brown partials,It is dense enough that a camera is pretty much useless.I looking for options to improve my catch ratio,I rate my ratio as average, but not as well as I believe it could be.
I'm leaning toward glow lures, any ideas or suggestions? There is a good quantity  of gills, cats, and it's stocked with trout in January and March. As far as glows, what colors would stand out with the lakes lack of clarity ?thanks for any responses.

Probably looking at blue or red. Red probably being the best in this case.

Red or Pink glow also try black, a darker color in dark water will blend in and stand out.
I always run black jigs in the river when its running brown.

I may be overthinking this, but to my understanding, isn't red the color that dissapears the quickest in the water? That said, since I admit not being up on glow,am I to assume that red glow performs differently than just red lures?I guess I'm courious now if glow red fades quicker than say glow blue, much like plain red fades quicker than plain blue at deeper or murkier water.Dang,I won't be able to go to bed tonight unless I figure it out....dang!

Osage I suggest getting jigs in both red and blue glow somedays one color will out preform the other for some reason. Also try jigs/ lures that give off a lot of vibration which will help fish locate the jig/lure. May the weather cooperate and give you a longer season this year.

A green/brown partial is a sure sign you are not fishing the right hole.  Just saying.

glow green with some kind of rattle and some scent, to bring them in.  pound bait on bottom to make noise too.  a submersible light(camera light) can also help in very silted waters, with snow cover, during the day. the fish will come to eat the plankton like things it draws in. watch out with the scent if there are cats around!  they will swarm on it and run other fish off. lol

I believe blue glows the longest....my suggestion some UV glow rattling baits ...various colors...I would think about 2 hours before sunset would be best fishing times . Do you tend not to catch anything after dark ? A place I fish shuts down at dark ...like a light switch...its a dark stained waterway.

the color red has the longest wavelength but it disappears first which could be in a few inches in murky water. the colors blue and green can be visible as deep as light penetrates the water. the species you are targeting also makes a difference as walleye's see blue , purple and violet poorly while they see red, yellow, orange and green best. Like Misssoulafish said, jigs with rattles, you could also use a spinner blade that causes vibrations, use black like a wooly bugger with piece of worm, or try scents. Really depends on the fish targeted, good luck and keep trying something different until you get the desired results. It took Edison 10,000 times to get a light bulb to work.

Thanks guys,I will be experimenting with different glows, and other lures.I put a camera down in 12 fow  last season,a fish had to be within a ft of my bait for the camera to see it,I caught fish, but I think it can be better.

Hmmmmm...... I've seen similar water before but I'm not sure that what the camera sees is comparable to what the fish sees? Know what I mean??

try a fish attractant like dr juice or mr ice hole. use a loud spoon like a frosty in glow and attractant. have two holes and use one to call them in and the other to catch them. chubby darters or the like with rattles in them move a long ways away from the hole, so keep your jig that is supposed to catch the fish up shallow and drop it when you see fish in your sonar. i use a 3 hole system for this type of fishing where i want two rods in. at times i need one down with the fish to keep them there while the other is catching them. the ducer stays in the center hole and out of the way in it's dedicated hole.
fish are used to that water, so i wouldn't over think it.

also, if it's hard for light to get thru it. try fishing shallower for the baits that don't make noise. i fish 8 feet of water most days and near their breading grounds. catching them any where in that column. they do move in some and out some, but mainly 8' is where i am catching fish in one lake that is 45".

Is the water always murky, or is it just happening now?

Some ponds will have murky waters right after the pond "turns over" in fall and spring.
If the pond doesn't usually have murky waters, it might clear up as time goes on.
If not, concentrate on fishing lures/baits that have scents and sound/vibrations as they will attract fish.
