Ice jigs or Bugs
« on: Dec 04, 2016, 10:16 AM »
I worked in the up State NY area about 8 yrs ago and had the pleasure of ice fishing Lake Champlain. The gentlemen that took me out were using a unique ice gig that haven't seen before.Just wondering if you guys could show me some of what you use for Perch and other pan fish.Would like to try em in Michigan for the same.FYI they looked a little to big for pan fish but worked great. Thanks

Not sure what that was but most anything works when you find fish. Somethings I am partial to are Bro Mud Bugs in green and size 10. Hali jig with chains (I put a heavier chain and hook on), there are many colors of these so find one you like. The old sweedish pimples work well. I really like tungsten jigs as well. Reds, green, black and gold. Often time a sweedish pimple with a small b'llak dropper and fly.

As stated above, just about anything will work when you're on a hungry school, but for those times when they're really slow I like the buckshot rattle jigs and rapala glow/rattle jigs tipped with some kind of meat, like a worm, a spike, salt pork, etc. etc.

I also use homemade jigs with rattles, too.
May the fish be with you.

I love the Halie jigs although I agree that you need to replace the tiny gold hooks that come on them.   I fish them with wax , maggot or tiny shiner.  They get down fast and work great when dead sticking.
I also like Tungsten jigs in firetiger or gold tipped with Maki plastic or Berkley 1" minnow.

Temp. is 1 degree here in northern NH.   Safe ice pretty soon.

Maybe Wed. if we don't get too much snow??

When I switch out a treble for a single hook on a jig I like to cut the nylon leader off an Eagle Claw perch-size hook and use it on the jig. They have the bait holders on the shaft which makes them great for adding a bit of bait to the jig.
May the fish be with you.

Honestly, I just added them. I use to be pro staff for Mepps and found them in a box of lures that I forgot I had. I figured that they would work well for walleye and pike. I'll let you know how they work.

Perhaps you are thinking of a bibbit?  A bibbit is a painted jig with the lead molded on the shank.  They are used in and around Champlain to catch perch.  I've never heard of them referred to by the name anywhere else.  If you search "bibbit" or "bibbet" on this site or Google, you should get a picture.

Lavaman,
They do catch fish, especially when the fish are negative. The small hooks can be a bit of a pain and it's hard to separate the smaller fish, so if the bite is good I'll use other baits first.

I have 3 kids and they love to ice fish. It doesn't bother them (or me) if the fish are small so long as they are biting we are having a ball. Easy enough to toss the babies back and just keep the 8 inchers and up for dinner

Pretty soon they will be driving ME to the lake  ;D ;D

Whatever catches fish, I know you have the knack for enticing them to bite when they don't even seem to be down there   :icefish:

Give 'em a shot, we love to eat 'em and it adds a lot to the meal. Smaller ones are even better, they cook faster (I like them to be cooked all the way through, not too soft in the middle). I like to dip them in ranch dressing or BBQ sauce like chicken nuggets.

My grandparents and parents used fry them in a pan of butter and eat them....never tried it myself but they used to love them.

I'll have to try them then Lavman. What about smelt eggs? It always feels a bit wasteful seeing those big egg sacks tossed in the trash.
