question about grillin on the ice
« on: Dec 03, 2016, 10:16 AM »
I usually go propane stove set up but want to try my litte smokey joe this year. can I just fire it up right on the ice or should it be put on top of something ( board etc..)? Or up off the ice( table) What do you guys suggest?

I can't speak for smokers, but I have always used a table for both Weber charcoal grill and Coleman propane stove top. More convenience than safety.

That was the common sense answer I was lookin for! lol! I was thinkin it should be on a tabletop but was concerned about burnin the wood beneath. (you know how it is with woman and fire or electricity) Thanks for the help much appreciated and have a great season up there in Saratoga!

Walmart has a real nifty little aluminum table in the camping section that I use a lot.

The little Weber's are up a little with their legs but why bend over to cook.

I might be wrong, but I believe I remember reading where it's not legal in CT (or smart) to make a fire directly on the ice.
Think tall!  ;D

Dont go crazy!!! make it simple and just set it down on the ice. All the extras are great but simple gets ya more fishin time. Be safe and enjoy!!!

I like the table idea too no bending. I haven't cooked for allot of people yet so I don't want to screw it up on meet n greet. I love cooking and want to be able to serve something good and do it efficiently. keeping it simple is good advice. I cant wait though, just got a bunch of custom jigs and spoons in the mail- 1/4 for pike! (who doesn't love getting lures in the mail?) I'm trying my luck using a rod for them this year for first time. major cold front coming fingers crossed!

Thursday night (assuming you are fishing saturday), fill a slow cooker with cheap cuts of bone in chicken, and throw a packet of fajita seasoning and some water, enough to sink the chicken. Fire it up when you go to bed, get a good 8-10 hours cook on it. Before work or other morning obligations Friday morning, put the chicken in a tin tray, and slide it into the fridge. Friday evening, slice up some thin slices of onion and pepper, sautee them up, and take the cold chicken out and shred it. Combine all the sauteed peppers and onions and the seasoned chicken, mix, and wrap in tin foil. Grab a pack of fajita shells (might wanna grab two packs), salsa, and sour cream, reheat the filling on a grill, and you might be the most poplar person on the lake that day.
A smart person would watch the few that ventured to the ice sheet, the daring would follow in their boot prints, but the pioneers would already be heading to where they belong.

I pack this little guy. http://www.ems.com/msr-whisperlite-universal-stove/1309494.html#start=11
I highly recommend it. Much easier and lighter to carry along.

Picked up a jet boil last year for making coffee and espresso. To be honest, it's mostly espresso with a splash of boca to sweeten it up. Less water to tote around, and faster. beats lugging the Colman stove.

I converted a portable fire pit by putting skis on it.  The only problem with not having anything under it is that the ice starts to melt and gets quite slick.  It's not really a big problem, I just move it over a few yards.  Or, if there is snow on the ice, I shovel some under it.  If I knew how to post pics, I'd do it.  Really, the height isn't a problem as I usually sit by the fire and cook that way.  Plus, you can jig and cook at the same time.
If you can't play nice, get off the ice!
