DON'T GET OLD IN CT
« on: Feb 18, 2016, 09:32 AM »
Apparently, the number of older fishermen in Connecticut is growing.  Therefore, never one to miss a buck, House Bill 5316 was introduced today which would charge a fee for fishing licenses to residents who turn 65 after January 1, 2017 (currently people over 65 get their license for free).  It is a small perk, but to avid fishermen who have paid from the age of 16, and will ultimately be living on a fixed income, it will just be another Connecticut "tax".  A phone call to your representative may help.

Yes that and the Trout Stamp, they want you to buy a stamp, like a duck stamp, to fish for trout.

Until they can guarantee the money from the stamp will go right back to the deep- it will never fly.
the pheasant program money is sucked into the general fund and then they try to cancel it.
WHY do we continue to vote for these people year after year???

Bluebucket....great post and I am one of those anglers who would be directly affected by the bill that you mention.

I just emailed all 5 of my representatives asking them to vote down the bill.

Here is a link to the website that gives the state rep contact information for any CT resident/ for IS members that want to follow your lead. Thanks again!!!

Better off voting for Alfred E. Newman from Mad Magazine
Now is the time for all good men and women to engage in the sport of ice fishing

Wisconsin makes you pay for an inland and a great lakes trout stamp on top of your fishing license.

There has been a trout stamp in RI for as long as I can remember.
Just add water.

I don't like it either , but the reality is Malloy will shut down the hatcheries and other stocking programs if they can't pay for themselves. Paying for the stamp may be the lesser of two evils .

The problem is that fishing is now an old man's sport.  Kids don't fish anymore.  Revenues have dropped because a large percentage of fishermen in Connecticut are over 65.  If people over 65 don't pay to keep the hatcheries open...who will????

I agree that it's tough to get kids into fishing. I work in a CT high school and usually take a group of kids ice fishing once a year. A few years back i had 6 kids join me. Over the past few years ZERO kids at a school of 1,000 have been interested. They'd rather watch Netflix or play on their Iphones. Sad but true, but I'm doing my best to get my three daughters and all of my buddies' kids out in the boat and on the ice.

Have to get them into it when they are very young. I have taught grade 2 for 15 years and usually invite my class to join once during the ice season. I've had up to 100 people out there throughout the day, and they love it.  Won't do it this year because of the sketchy ice conditions though.
If you can't play nice, get off the ice!

There's bigger problems in this state besides Malloy. How about the Senator with brain damage that got re-elected without campaigning because he was in the hospital. He just got busted for wrecking his car and claims he can't remember. Thankfully he's not running again, but he's still the head of a powerful committee. How much would you like to bet that he'll end up with a state commissioners' job?

Fellow IS Members:
We all have a dog, in this fight.
We support our state with our taxes, pay into the outdoor programs and at the end of the day, out elected politicians, squander our monies.
Everything is labeled for the general fund. My retirement is taxed, AGAIN, my social security is taxed, AGAIN, when does this stop???
Remember Lowell P. Weicker, Jr, elected Governor of our great state.
He proposed and passed our State Income Tax, that was suppose to be removed, after we balanced the books.
Well, guess what, we will NEVER balance these books. The clowns we elect, to represent us, in Hartford, will
never work to balance the books. It is well known that those folks will spend every extra cent we give them !!
The two proposed bills are the last straw for me. I sent emails to my representatives, telling them
YOU WILL FORCE ME TO LEAVE MY BELOVED STATE, if they are passed !! Never thought I would say those words, but, I said them !!
AND, my beautiful wife agreed, we need to move on, to be free and live in a more comfortable place.
This is not a conversation, to you all, to do as I think, but, to VOICE your thoughts, to your representatives,
express your opinions, get them and yourself INVOLVED!!! My God, what has this come to??
This is a site I love and look forward to reviewing all fishing stories, and yet, it has become as political as every other thing in America today....sad !!
Protest these bills with your representatives, PLEASE !! Hopefully we will have a LOUD voice, in Hartford !!!

Pay the state! I earn a dollar & they only take .68. There's no problem. I'm still .32 ahead. Got to leave for work now. No money to fish! )-:

The facts are that very few people under 30 fish and no over 65 pays for a license. We have an aging demographic, so hunters and fishermen over 65 make-up a larger and larger percentage of the total. Liberals hope that sportsmen will disappear. Their fine with taking away our gun rights and closing the hatcheries. A 5-dollar senior license won't bring much money to the state, but it will let politicians know how many of us are still around and that we care about things like fishing. The problem with free lifetime senior licenses is that there is no way to tell how many of us are still out there (haven't died!!) and are still fishing and not locked up in some nursing home. All politicians only care about two things, money and votes. When you buy a license or a duck stamp....yes you are giving them money, but you are also making them aware of how many of us are out there and what is important to us.

One thing I failed to point out, I still pay for my State & Private land Turkey permits, my Deer Permits,
My State Duck Stamp, Outdoor equipment, i.e. clothes, bait, poles & reels, guns, ammo, food, beverages, gas, etc.,
all taxed by this State !! Never mind if I am over 65, we ALL continue to pay, & vote !!
Like I said "Let them know your displeasure with them and their lousy behavior" !!! November is coming !!!

Complain today & pay tomorrow. Does it ever matter? A politicians career is a life time of trustfullness. Say never & say there's no other way! Need to pay for 5 state workers' to stand around & watch 1 work. Why r they picking on us state workers? We work so hard!   Politicians suck! Sorry lazy state workers. No cruel intentions.
Is it sometimes a fish being caught or you?
