Pure michigan day one
« on: Feb 07, 2016, 08:14 PM »
Bldfrt myself and a buddy hit portage lake in michigan today. 8 inches of ice and a beautiful day. Caught about 100 plus perch and about 40 smelt. I've never caught smelt so that's cool. Didn't keep anything since we had some more traveling but are pike fishing long tomorrow. We will hopefully be bring home some pike. Felt good to get on ice. Not used to the longer walks. My knees are sore. Tight lines all

Should have kept some of those smelt for pike bait.  Even dead they work well on tip ups

We have some for tip up tomorrow....guess I should have clarified. I've never eaten smelt...kinda wish we would have kept some to try. Oh well. This season has been bad for me. The fact that we caught numbers is cool. And we were the last one on the lake. Going for more than 2 hrs of sleep tonight

Good job and yeah you should have tried the smelt, they are very tasty but not for everyone.  Good Luck on the Pike.

Love the smelt.  The smaller they are the better they are.  Save a dozen or so next time and just take a pair of scissors, cut off head, slit belly, gut, season/four, fry, eat. Ummmmmmm ! ! !
