Is there a heavy duty Hali jig out there??
« on: Feb 03, 2016, 07:15 AM »
I really like the action of the Hali style jigs (chain with hook style) but they are so wimpy if you get an incidental catch of laker or bass etc they invariably rip the chain n hook right off. Is anyone aware of a heavier duty style jig like these..?
Thanks in advance...

Replace the chain and hook with heavy fluoro and a stronger hook.

My solution would be to set the drag for the weakest link in the tackle, the chain and hook. With the lure tied onto the line of your rod put the hook through a loop on something heavy, lift the rod until you have the desired pressure on the hook and chain and loosen the drag until it slips. Then reel in the slipped line and lift the rod again to see if the line slips like it's supposed to.

When you get a bigger fish on he will run and pull line and the drag will scream (the fun part!), but the fish won't go far and you'll be able to play him and tire him out to get him to the hole.

This is how I setup my rods and reel and it works well for me, I can land some very big fish on very light tackle.

... but if you're fishing with sticks go with the chain and hook replacement.
Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day, give him a religion and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish... author unknown

Those addons from the sponsor look nice but a #10 treble is still too small on a laker, I straightened out a Hali chain hook on about a 4# fish. I like the idea of a SS chain though, have to raid grandmas jewelry crafting.

Two weekends in  a row, jigging Hali's, I got bit off ABOVE the Hali. Rod bent, drag screamed then *poof* gone. Reel up and the 6# mono is bit right through. A stronger drop chain or stronger hook wouldn't have saved me.

No, but it sounds like you're using the right bait!

Agreed! I don't mind these problems  ;D One was a 35mm Hali, red glo color and the other was a 50mm Hali, perch color. Both times tipped with a bunch of spikes.

Thanks for covering my back wire! It was a small, southern VT lake. I will have to blindfold you, put headphones on you playing gospel music and transport you to the spot in a cargo trunk where I will let you out of the trunk. You will not be allowed to have a cell phone or any sort of GPS device on your person  ;D ;D

Sitka smelt sticks  better than a Hali and has a better price.  Much better hook and chain
