Moosehead Lake conditions?
« on: Jan 26, 2016, 10:17 AM »
Hey I was wondering if anyone has fished the rockwood area recently,
and what would be best to bring up this weekend sled or wheeler?
Thanks in advance

I am headed up for the weekend Thursday night and I am bringing the wheeler but still going to be very careful in traveling.  I will probably still haul the sled trailer just in case it snows or in case we go for a sled ride although I don't believe its any good.  A buddy of mine fished Beaver cove this past weekend which is the area we will be staying and he said there was about 10 inches of ice but it was bare ice.  We typically travel the lake quite a bit while we are up there fishing so I don't know how much of that we will be doing.  I did hear about a guy going through around the Tomhegan area which is not that far from there.

I'm headed up Thursday as well with a group. Rockwood only locked up a couple of weeks ago, be careful. I have heard reports of 10-12" around the southern end of the lake. Although it looks like it will be warm, I'm not ready to swim yet so will probably fish that end. Different area, but a sled went through on Rangeley yesterday. If I can get online, I will post what I find Thursday. Good luck. And stay safe.

They were ice boating at the Birches this past weekend.  Beautiful conditions and glare ice as far as one could see.  Bring the spikes for certain.  These folks are very thorough and reported about 8" in most places that were spot checked.

I'm all for one sharing information when possible and hope this helped a few.

Check the ice all over but my uncle has a camp up there and said snowmobiles were all over it this past weekend.

Drove all over rockwood side the least I could find in the middle was 8" solid black ice. Pressure ridges are low but still a little hairy. Should be safe travels with equipment but check frequently. Good luck!

It was a nice morning. I fished the rockwood area where there was from 8 to 13 " glare black Ice .  The river was froze over but barely a couple inchs. Looks  deceivingly  safe.  The markers are out but there's no  snow . Greenville on the other hand was completely snow covered . Hardest ice ice drilled this year. Wheelers the way to go if your going to rockwood  @)

We found ice between 8-13" where we were. Sled trail markers went out. Hopefully the rain stays away. Sleds, wheelers, and UTV's all over the place. Even saw a truck out there.
