So Our Lakes Just Re-Froze..........
« on: Apr 04, 2016, 06:51 AM »
What a bag over the head punch in the face this weather is! But yes, a small pond near my house was skimmed over this morning, April 4th

Mono Mono the weather the past few days has to be one of the more extreme changes that I've witnessed in my life. I'm located south east of you in the Mid Hudson river valley not far from the U.S.M.A./West Point by the city of Newburgh,NY. This past Friday the high temperature was around 80 degrees. I attended a lacrosse game Friday night when the game ended shortly after 9 PM it was in the upper sixties. Saturday night into Sunday morning received 1 to 2 inches of snow, light snow on Sunday night. Currently sleeting outside with temperature of 33 degrees. My area occasionally receives an early April Snow storm that leaves us with 4 to 6 inches of snow. Last time I experienced any thing like this was back in March of 2012 we had daytime highs in the upper sixties and low seventies ,Magnola tree on my property bloomed then we got a night with low temp. in the twenties killed off the flower blossoms. One day later temperature were back near sixty for day time high and over night low in the mid forties.

When I was younger in the 50's and 60's we used to regularly ice fish in the morning and trout fish in the afternoon the 1st week of April.  Snow and cold weather in early April is nothing new to us older guys.  Last year I ice fished on Chautauqua the 2nd Sat in April.

If not for that warm spell in the end of Feb beginning of March we would still be ice fishing. The lakes ice has gone to crap but is still hanging on. A few small lakes are open but most bigger lakes still are ice covered but no one is brave enough to go out on the crappy ice.

I'm in the same situation, yesterday I went checking a few ponds to take my daughter fishing and three of them had some skim ice.  Nothing like insult to injury for the very short season we had this year.

We never lost our snow cover here with a foot or more remaining on the ground.  20 miles to the South has had bare ground off and on since the March warm spell but the cold and snow since then has kept the ice in decent shape on the lake I fish. Snowmobiles were still running on it Saturday.  A couple more trips before the warm stuff makes the top soft this week; then some trout fishing on the streams. Living in the snow belt makes for a different schedule.
