Lith/ion Batteries in cold weather.
« on: Jan 05, 2016, 08:10 AM »
What is the best way to keep Lith/ion batteries warm in cold weather?

I am setting up a Dewalt 20v 4 amp system to fit a 6" lazer auger shaft.

I thought of a small cooler with hand warmers, but there might not be enough air
in the cooler to keep the handwarmers functioning properly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks-

my buddy uses a nylon bag with a hand warmer in it and keeps it on his drill out in the wind/cold.
i use an ammo box for batteries like the sla and spare drill battery and keep it off the ice. i drill most of my holes after a few scouting holes. if no fish in the first few holes, i'll make a bunch of them all at once in a certain depth and pattern.
i don't have battery drain from cold most times.

you could make some holes in an ammo box for hand warmers and keep yours in one. lay a sheet of closed cell foam rubber into the bottom and maybe line it with the same.

check the specs for temps on your battery too. most are below zero.

I've got a Fuel M18 and I don't worry about the batteries at all.  I take two but rarely put the second on.  Give it a try without heat before you worry yourself to death.

I have an ion and haven't had many problems with the batteries. I keep them in a nylon insulated lunch bag with 2or3 hand warmers. Used it as low as -5 degrees. Just don't leave battery outside at that temp

I see these posts and I always wonder how the old kerosene hand warmers would function for this.

I found a 5V to 12v Electric Heating Pad. Its about 4"x2". At 5 volts it produces 120 Deg. F and at 12v produces 230 Deg. F. I put the battery in a soft sided cooler. Kid bag mentioned would also work. I run mine at 7.5v using a small regulator on one of the fish camera batteries from Fleet farm for $12. Keeps it warm for 6 hours.
