Cabela's and ice fishing gear
«

Hello Ice Shanty members. I made a topic a few weeks ago about basic ice fishing gear. I am actually going to Cabela's tomorrow and a have about $50 to spend. I am going to go with friends and was wondering what I should buy with all of the Boxing Day sales on. Is it possible for anybody to make a list of what I should buy like rods reels, tip ups etc. To just get me started. I don't need an auger or vexilar because my friends are providing that.

You should add your location to your profile...
Whats your target species ? Are you allowed to use tip up/ tip downs and how many ?
I would suggest a under $ 30 Jigging rod/reel combo ....some jigs recommended by your friends ..H style tip up(s) ..just get the best bang for your buck ......you could always start with tip ups and I am sure your friends will let you borrow a jigging rod set up on your next outing ....you'll collect enough stuff over time ..patience is key to be a great ice angler .

What are your friends using? I'd start with equipment similar to what they are using so you spend time fishing and not learning what doesn't work for whatever you are targeting.

This is just a guess because I have never fished in your area. If I were to visit and could take $50 of gear with me I would get a $20 jigging combo, a slender spoon, a Buchshot rattle spoon, a rattln rap, a 4 pack of jigs and a Tub of wax worms. I would try to get the smaller sizes of each. Maybe one slender spoon, larger if you have money left. That should give you a chance at anything below the ice. Have fun and enjoy the day.
I am certain someone that is familiar with the area can do better. A key thought though is that usually, smaller is better.

I doubt they have it at Cabellas, but depending on the amount of friends going with, I'd get at least a 30 pack of Busch Light.

Best thing to do is take one of your friends with you. He will help set you up with what you need. Since they will be taking you with them and have the auger they will pretty much dictate what you will be targeting. If it's walleyes then get a rod/reel and tackle to target walleyes. Same goes with bluegills, crappies, perch, etc. If they run and gun to look for fish then using tip ups is pointless.

what are you fishing for?
Tip ups - Frabill Arctic Fire Tip Ups are 16.99 each. So 2 of those = 34$
-> add a spool of woodstock tip up line for $4 = 38
-> I like the VMC sureset treble hooks but any treble hooks work = 42$
-> Either some 15 pound mono or braid (or jus2-4t steel leaders) = 4-8$
Jigging - Cabelas pro guide ice combo on sale for 30$
->line (2-4lb test)
-> Various jigs (custom jigs and spins or VMC are good)
-> VMC spoons
Waxies for jigging or Shiners for tip ups.

$50 means you will need to fish with friends that can provide shelter, heat, holes in the ice etc.
On that budget, get a rod/reel combo that comes pre-strung with line, then as many PK lures as you can get with the rest of your money. I see you are from here in Sk, so Walleye and Pike will probably be your main species, and you cannot go wrong with PKs, Swedish Pimples, Buck Shot rattle spoons, etc. All will be similar in price, color variety, action, and get a similar bite.
Then if you want to add Perch to your target species, you can add a couple packs of Genz worms or other tiny ice hooks from Walmart, they come in packs of 5 for about $2
