Nils, wow they really do cut like they say!
« on: Nov 21, 2015, 09:02 PM »
Picked up a 8" nils Thursday night and took out today and wow! I went through 6" of ice like it was 2". No effort, no pushing down on it just set it down and turn it. Nice. I know you all heard it all before but I didn't believe it and I just had to tell ya. Still worried about some of the lakes out here and the sand and dirt but that's why I have a gas auger.
Oh and did pull a few brookies out to so it was a good 1st day of ice fishing!

It's an awesome tool. Just take care with it. They will not hold up to abuse. With care you will get many tears of service from it.

beats a 8 inch or a five in laser any day don't it? don't forget to get a spare blade when you can just to keep you running if you got to send one set out  all of a sudden... from the sand on the ice you get out there this way no down time lol's...

Sand is a bad thing. It may feel sharp but they still won't cut.
Thats Why They Call It Fishing.

Proceed with caution!  That's how my Nils habit started too. A 6" for those times when I didn't feel like dragging the old Jiffy 30/10" out.  2 months later the Tanaka is secured, an 8" Nils and a backup head for the 6" are on order and I sold the Jiffy.  No regrets.  Enjoy!

Curly,    a Nils head is blade and mount.  When a blade comes in for sharpening the mount is taken into account and adjusted if need be.
You can't just take off material and expect the new edge and mount to jive with each other.   The head is tested on ice and adjusted to cut like new Nils should.

A spare Nils head, a good cover and clean ice. Don't drill out old holes and get Frank's info, he does great work. Enjoy your Nils. Dani

They completely live up to the hype and there is nothing else close. That being said they seam to be trying to price themselves out of the market. I paid 100 for a 6" one 4 years ago and now they are 150. I don't see the blade issues mine is 4 years old and has never been resharpend. I fish at least weekly and drill plenty of holes.

The 8" blue Nils is on sale at Cabelas right now for $150.  I can get the Lazer for $90.  I'm sure its better, but is it $60 better?

I had a Lazer (still do) for years and last year bought a Nils.  The Nils is so much better its not funny.  I don't think I'll ever own a power auger.  No need to with the Nils.  Its much lighter than a power auger and no fussing with gas, propane, or batteries.  Worth every bit of the difference.

Post like this where someone has owned and used both options are the most valuable bits of info on the interwebs.  Thanks Eagle, I'm going to grab the Nils and hook it up to the new Milwaukee.

Last year I bought my Nils 8 inch.  First day I had it out I drilled fifteen holes before my buddy had his Jiffy auger started.  He ended up drilling his holes with my Nils.  Guess what he is buying this year. ;D

if you compare the 6 inch laser to the 8 inch nils you got twice the surface area on the nils.... as you can see you do not on the laser... so why is it faster in the video the nils is compared to the laser ? with little to know effort?  if you can answer this that effort less cutting  is worth the extra cost not needing a gas powered auger or a electric powered auger.. those were  cause of weight restrictions of electric like batteries or even the smell of gas on your hands form the gas powered augers spooking fish away...if those are important things to you then I would get a nils not needing to own a power auger is a big plus in  2 foot of ice..

Not sure I understand your post Willy, but I think you're saying people that don't want heavy batteries or mixing/spilling/running out of gas, then go with the Nils for the extra $60.

I also noticed some bad reviews on the new M18 1200.  I'm thinking its just a few people with bad expectations.  I have to imagine that thing is a beast.

sorry about that basement flooded a couple days ago and never looked back at the post.. if you look at the laser it has less surface area then the nils so why is it not faster?  your also right on the not needing to buy a hand drill motor  and or a gas motor operated auger.. cause mixing gas and weight is better on the nils but you can still can add a hand drill to it no problems....

with that is where I was thinking of going with a fin bore but after seeing that video making me think all the fin bore is a laser.... you throw in on a drill it is just as slow as a laser...  but for the cost of the blade it unseen cost a lot think and a lot think it is high maintenance... but nils blades  can be sharpened for around $30 shipped back and forth were you can get lasers sharpened for about $10 or less if no sharpening services is around it is another $40 aprox for a new set of blades...   it all how you feel in the end and what you think of nils that video I showed earlier show nils is better but it is worth it to some maybe not all....

All I know folks is I've been out every weekend since I got mine and I can drill threw the ice so easy and fast its nuts! I've had 5 guys come up to me with they're lazer wanting to know why and how I was drilling so fast, one guy thought the ice was thin where I was at. LOL. I've out drilled a Honda lite strike master, 2 eskimo makos and my z71 eskimo.  Only 8" of ice but geez, 4 or 5 turns and I'm through. Gotta love it! Last week 28 holes, that's the most I've had to drill so far to stay on the fish but no problem for a busted up ole fart, lot of back injurys and surgerys.

I'm thinking of using a Ridgid 545lb. torque drill on my Nils convertable.  Is this just wishful thinking, or will I burn up a drill?

I decided to NOT burn up a weakish motor on my Ridgid drill, and took the plunge on a Milwaukee Fuel.  I'm thinking it may be overkill, but with no ice here presently, I'm still waiting to test out the new toy. C'mon Ice!
