Where abouts at the champlain bridge are they fishing? There seems to be open water all the time right in the middle. We have fished Kellys bay a few times this year. 12-16" of ice in the bay, open water in the middle.

have to be careful around the bridge all the time but should have safe ice there now . the problem is the snow on the ice now makes it tough treading and insulates the ice. there has been noone fishing there for the past 2 days after the snow storm though. they are catching the lakers south of the champlain bridge also on safer ice. hope this helps.

Are you talking about the bridge between Alburg and Rousse's point ?

I bet there is open water under the bridge, it seems to always be like that.

I have fished both sides of the bridge, pretty close to it too, you will be good to go.  There are some small smelt there, so the predator fish should be there as well.

Three weeks ago we hammered lakers there(north side running tipups from shallow edge to the deeper middle part of the bridge).  I have been twice since and haven't pulled up any.  I am going to change it up this weekend and try the Burlington Bay area -  Proctor shoal/Shelburne Bay or the north side by the mouth of the Winooski.  Personally, I want one on a jig pole,  the tip ups are not nearly as fun with lakers.

I'll probably head to that general area after trout season on the inland lakes closes. Thinking of hitting Caspian this weekend.
Perch bait- a small minnow that can have big results in the ice fishing game.  :icefish:

Last night I fished 100 yards north of the bridge in the channel illuminated by the glow of its lights until ~ 10:00 PM.

Great sunset - great stargazing.

12 - 14" of ice and a couple perch.

Any walleyes in the bridge area or is it more salmon/laker country? Seems shallow for most of the laker fishing I do (Lake George/Otsego). PM if needed. Thanks...

I'm going just north of the bridge. I'll be there crack of dawn. I hope your can still drive out a ways. Any ideas on if driving is still safe going north? I'll report back tomorrow. Hopefully with pictures. Hopefully the 2.5 hr drive will be worth it. My dream is any keeper size salmon, a big brown (5+lbs), or a 10lb Laker. I know I have high hopes.....lol

Good luck and let us know how it went - also sent you a PM with a suggestion given you're driving a distance.

Spent the day about 400 yds north of the bridge, closer to the Vermont side. My buddy and I set up 18 tipups and jigged all day. The highlight of the trip was my buddy had, what he described as, a big silver fish (24in+) with a hook jaw up in the hole jigging. Just before I got to the hole it wrapped around his transducer and got off. I hate when that happens..lol. I only marked 1 Laker all day. He cashed my spoon up and down about 10 times. I hate when that happens too..lol. Other then that we ended up jigging about 24 keeper perch. Ice was about 2ft thick and melting fast. Don't know if it's better early ice there for Lakers and Salmon, but we we're a little disappointed with 5 hrs total driving time and only a couple dozen perch to show.....But that's fishing. Ice was 2ft+ and getting very wet on top...
