need opinions
« on: Feb 18, 2015, 10:00 PM »
Were going to Erie with my uncle that always fishes Sag Bay. I usually have a snowmobile and his extra otter shanty but only want to take my one man Kenai Pro. Would it make it going 40mph going over the ice cracks and what not? Any opinions would be great!

I don't know if I would go 40mph across the ice on erie with fishing equipment.  We usually take our time going out to make sure we can get across cracks and what not.  We don't use snowmobiles though.  Last year my shanty about got beat to death dragging it behind our utv much slower than 40.  I don't have runners on it so it got a bit roughed up.

Shanty or not going 40MPH on a snowmobile or ATV on a lake the size of erie with cracks and heaves is just asking for something bad to happen.  Take your time and get there safe.  You can't fish if your equipment gets destroyed due to being in a rush to get there.

X2 on wax worms comment. We don't even travel that fast on tournament trail pulling equipment. Disaster in the works

I wasn't sure how fast we go, I know we slow down at the cracks.

On a good day with good visibilty maybe 20-25 mph tops!  Most of the time 10-15 mph seems about right.  All it takes is 1 small bump or ice chunk to send your gear flying!

I would think it would be fine pulling your shanty at an average speed.  I will say erie can be hard on your gear.  I didn't notice that my shanty skirt had gotten pulled under the front of the shanty and when I got back in the last day I had worn it ragged.

You won't see anyone else doing 40! If you do...you will be the topic of conversation at the local watering holes come evening!
