Flasher Storage/Transport Ideas on Snowmobile
« on: Feb 16, 2015, 11:33 AM »
Hey All, just traded my MXZ in on a 2000 Grand Touring....wanted something stronger for towing the portable out as well as something more comfortable for the 2nd passenger. I used to pull an Otter sled behind the Clam portable for our gear (auger, propane, buckets all went in the Otter) but we want to downsize now and get everything into the Clam that we can. I want to keep the flasher out of there to avoid damage. Does anyone have any good ideas on storage racks on their snowmobiles? I was thinking 2 - 5 gallon buckets with foam somehow attached to the rear rack but now sure how good the plastic pails would hold up after drilling holes into them etc.

Really looking for any good ideas on storage racks on the back of these sleds. I know there are already some ideas and pics on here, but just wondering if anyone has anything more specific to the grand touring sleds.

Thanks.

I just picked up a new to me touring sled, I am going to u bolt a piece of wood to the rear rack and then u bolt 2 milk crates to the board, should work good and provide a ton of extra storage. You can fit alot of stuff in a 5 gallon bucket which will fit right int he milk crate.  I got some crates today i'll be toolling away I'll post pics when I'm done.

I rigged this up in about an hour yesterday I only have a jet sled XL and it gets stuffed pretty quick so I needed additional storage for buckets etc and somewhere to mount my shanty. I took a board measured out the length to fit a couple milk crates, got some 175 lb zip ties and some eye bolts and big washers I attached the board through the two holes I drilled in the rear rack, ( circled in red) the big eye bolts went up through the holes I drilled in the rack to the board. I now have additional attachment points to strap my quick fish down, to attach the milk crates I just drilled 8 holes 3 sideways and one set going across the other 3.  zipped it through the holes I drilled now 4 are holding on each crate they seem rock solid as does the board.

In the blue bag is a socket set and first aid kit, I didn't want to cover the factory rack because I wanted a space to keep the blue bag and still need access to the rear of the seat where I keep other tools, belt, plugs, pliers, rope, etc. I have a tackle bag for lure storage it will fit perfectly between the crates and it'll be held sideways by the crates and the shanty to the rear, when I strap the shanty down I'll go over the top. The bungies are there ready for use. Next season I'll most likley get a flip over so I may just add a 3rd crate and put a new board on, gonna work in a pinch for this weekend though.

I hope that makes sense. Here are before and after pics

Right now the milk crates are connected to each other and the sled with heavy-duty zip ties. For next year I may mount the crates on a piece of 1/4" plywood, clamped to the snowsled rack. Also put an auger mount atop the crates, strap on a 1x2 with gun racks on both ends. Everything but the shanty goes on the sled.

Why dont you guys mount a cartop carrier on the back? all your stuff would be inclosed and dry.  Guys always talk about loosing stuff in route.  I myself dont own a Snowmobile but if i did thats what i would do. then pull shanty.

Not a bad idea. I'm sure they make all kinds of sizes to fit the application, I just took a quick look, they are pretty pricey for the plastic ones.
