Hook holders for noodle rods
« on: Feb 03, 2015, 08:24 AM »
My noodle rod is so flexible that the jig keeps getting out of the hook holder with the slightest touch or jar.  Anyone come up with a good way to keep them secure (so the cats etc don't get them).  Small springs, rubber bands, lets hear your solution.

I cut up a bunch of 1" squares of velcro and just pinch the jig between them leaving a small space between the jig and the rod blank so it doesn't wear and create a weak spot on the blank.

With noodle rods, the tip is the most delicate and prone to fractures  (resulting in broken tip).  Most damage occurs when transporting the blank or when not in use.  Let's say if you had a large jig on and reeled jig up at end of day, and reel it too far and up into the top guide.  The compression of the jig tightened into the guide most likely fractured the fiberglass tip.  It may not break until you use it again and put some weight on the tip.

It is strongly recommended that when not in use, you remove the line from the guides (at least the top guides).  I use quick snaps on my jigs and pull the line back through to the last guide, then put jig back on and hook into hook keeper.

I'm talking about power noodles and al dente type blanks.  Most complaints of damage of these rods are tips breaking, and this is a big cause of it.

Either get rid of the cat or get rid of the exposed jig.  Personally I would not let my cat play with my noodle (rod).
take care,

Pull the jig through the tip eyes until you get to the backbone of the rod. Dont want your noodle bent anyways or it will stay like that.

I use the gray 1/2 foam pipe insulation. inexpensive cut to size( comes in 48" lengths) and I just close it with a wrap of electrical tape. for the handle end I use an exacto knife and trim to fit over the handle to the reel shank.
I have Thorne Brothers custom Quiver stick and Noodle rods protected this way.

I take  liquid electrical tape and fill up the hook keeper with it. It lasts a long time, Refill as needed.

I take pieces of 1-1/8" ID thin-wall PVC and make rod tubes for my jigging rods.   They protect the tips and keep the rod straight, so the jig stays on the hook keeper.  Only the reel sticks out of the tube.

The PVC pipe is cheap and the small amount of time it takes to make the cut-out with a Dremel is well worth it, in my opinion!

Tight lines,
Bob
