Solo shelters what is top of line?
« on: Feb 28, 2015, 06:00 PM »
I am in market for a solo flip up shelter. I will be pulling it. No ATV or snowmobile. I'd like it to be big enough to carry small minnow bucket, Nils hand auger, small jig box and my Arctic clothing to put over my bibs if it gets cold. Love to load up five traps and a few jigging rods ahead of time maybe a 12 v battery for some LED lights.

I fish so much every winter that money not really an issue....I light to travel light and fast...but on the other hand I am at the point where I need better organization. Next season ( or even maybe this season) way things are looking in Mass...I want to tow flip up out anchor down have jambox playing off iPhone, aerator pumping, tip ups deployed and enough light that it will look like aliens have landed on the ice

What is the way to go here...I usually fish alone.

I just bought a kenai pro and love it. Heavy but not really gonna be a issue for you. Plenty of room Im 6'5" 240. Fishing space is good I usually have a vex, mr buddy,5gallon pail and small minnow bucket on the Ice while fishing. Seat is comfy but you can by an extra pad for the seat. Only flaw to me is windows don't open like they do in my two man trekker.

Not sure what they are up to, they do not even show them other then as parts and only the Hyfax Runners and cover show up then.
May your tip-up spool while your flag raises with hopes of landing the big one.

Ok thanks guys. Looks like Frabill is moving away from solo flip ups...I liked the idea for built in storage...I also liked Frabill Snosuits better than new suits....seems like they are moving away from me...

Clam has a lot of product...difficult to tell them apart. I guess the X1 is top of line solo?

I will check out Sharpell and Eskimo now

Clam Legend XL thermal. This shanty has more than enough room for everything. The seat is very comfortable and it has a built in LED light bar in the top support pole. I have been taking it up to lake erie ice fishing and i got it loaded down with plano boxes, jetboil, food, minnow cooler, extra battery, extra 1lb propane tanks, little buddy heater, vexilar and 5 galllon bucket.

I've used a Frabill Ultra Lite flip-over for years. At  27# its the lightest flipover I know of; midgrade fabric & no seat. Still need a Smitty sled to pull through deep snow.

If you are asking about shelters you can actually buy I would look at clam scout I believe it is the lightest.i also have the kenai pro more head room but don't pull worth a crap in snow.the ones with the agressive runners one the bottom I don't think are good in snow.flatter the better.

frabill commando is a great all day shelter and top of the line great seat and roomy. the shappell fx100 is a light run and gun 1 man shack.the eskimo wide 1 is a good shack to but pretty heavy and the seat doesn't swivel and its a pain to get out of if your tall.pretty much have to flip it up every time and let all the heat out.

The commando is still available through retailers...look at http://www.farmandfleet.com/ for the commando (255 on sale) and recon (143 on sale)

You can easily fit all of that equipment into the Commando/Recon sled and still have plenty of room, they pull easily as well. I carry (in the sled) 5" lazer on a drill, tackle box, Frabill tackle bag, 3 rods, little buddy heater, bottle of water, etc. with plenty of room left over

I've had mine for 2 seasons now, wouldn't trade it for anything else! I took this picture last weekend as 8" of snow was falling and the wind picked up to 30mph - never had an issue

Modification thread: http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=293004.msg3064202#msg3064202
Even with all the junk I've added to mine it still pulls pretty well in heavy snow, we have 6-9" on the ground now and I had it out nearly all day yesterday

Frabill has excellent customer service to boot.

X2, although the solos are too cramped for me.  I would go with the Quick Flip 2.
