White perch help
« on: Jan 13, 2015, 06:04 PM »
Looking for some info on white perch fishing. Mostly depths etc. I know the general area where I can launch to find them but not sure how deep of water to look for or if they like deep valleys or shallow flats. PM if preferred. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a friend who is a disabled vet that would like to get on some whites and I want to get him out to catch some.

20 '-30' also.1' to 2'  off bottom. Check bait often. Brackish to clear water in back bays. I prefer small bait ,smelts.

There must be a twelve step program for this

As swamp donkey said, I have had the most success in about 20 feet of water and they travel in schools and are most times suspended. If you have a flasher you will have the best luck. If you go to a pond that allows 6 traps set up some with smaller minnows to try to locate the school and when you locate them you can jig.

About the same as others have said - 30 or so feet of water and 5 feet off bottom.

Thanks guys. I'll be on the big lake. I know a few spots where they generally run but this info will save me time dialing in on them. Thanks again!

Some good info here.  Thank you.  I plan on targeting some Whites this weekend.  Not familiar with the Big Lake, but will probably give Balch Pond a try.  What would you recommend for jigging?  Jig type?

I've had good luck out there on Balch with spike tipped Hali's, small pimples, small lindy jigs tipped with spikes, forage minnows.....all depends on the day.

I happen to come across the below article, "Winnipesaukee Whites" from a Clam promo magazine I picked up at the Rockingham fishing and hunting expo. The article has some good info on depths, structure preferences and tactics for fishing white perch, nothing specific about Winni but I figured it may be beneficial for some.

Thanks for great info.  Wish I could have gotten to the Rockingham Show.

Whites can be easy or a challenge to catch. I find them to be more selective on the forage when whatever they are eating is abundant and complete idiots when there is a shortage. Lakes with a good supply of smelt can be an expensive bait bill. To the other extreme lakes with no forage will make you feel like a jigging God.
