I got a call from my bddy JakeTrout Saturday night, he said he was talking to some guys that just came off the ice and they had done pretty well and apparently there was plenty of ice! That’s all I needed to hear. I was actually sitting on the ice at Quinte not catching anything (I forgot my fishfinder) so I decided to pack it in early and head home to get ready for the morning.
Not really being interested in whitefish we didn’t hit the ice until 9:00. Not really knowing how the ice was we spudded our way everywhere we went and were pleasantly surprised to find about 5” everywhere (where we were). My first drop of the 2015 laker season was met with a rocket off bottom that smashed my spoon but quickly came off. This was a sign of things to come. Between the two of us we hooked and lost about 10 fish throughout the day….working out the early season kinks.
Thankfully we did manage to hook into a few really nice fish to make the day worth it. Lipless cranks, Vibrado and Jigging raps did the damage. We moved quite a bit during the day but found most of our fish in the 110 fow range.
A group of us will be on Quinte at Huffs Point from Thursday to Friday. If you are down that way head left from the access point and come by and say hi!
