whitefish
« on: Feb 12, 2015, 11:50 AM »
I was just poking around the boards and found the whitefish forum - http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=61.0

I haven't heard of whitefish before, and I am pretty intrigued. I was wondering, are there any places in PA to catch whitefish? Even after the thaw out on Lake Erie? I've never heard of anyone in NW PA fishing for whitefish before, but in searching, I came across this article which seems to indicate they are out there -  http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/outdoors/2010/09/30/Caught-in-a-net-of-laws-and-bans-fishermen-lost-their-livelihood/stories/201009300474

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Whitefish are more of a northern , deeper Glacial like fish. Don't think we have many if , any in Pa. Very tasty. Used to target them when I lived in Michigan.
Don't horse em!

I have seen the net boats in erie catch them when I was a kid.  I target them in Lake Simcoe in Canada ton of fun to catch and are very good to eat

The only placed I've seen people catch them was up in Canada.  As stated before they are primarily a deep water natural lake species of the north.

Those are some nice fish, chute. Was that on Simcoe?

Thanks all, for the info. If I ever do find any more info about whitefish in Lake Erie, I'll post back here.

Yes that is simcoe...  Gold and silver Williamson spoon jigging it in 100 ft of water.  We travel about 10 miles out from Bonnie's launch to find fish.
