Well, I had a new beaver dam tip up hit by a snowmobile last weekend.  Yup, snowmobile kept going!   First time this has ever happened in 30 years of ice fishing.  Bummer, but need to learn from my mistakes and move forward.  I was thinking 1" PVC cut into 3 foot lengths.  Then spray painted a bright color with some sort of flag attached?  Looking for any ideas.  I do have to make about 12 of these for my family.

Get the creative juices flowing this morning!

Thanks in advance

Cinder block, spray painted white. Won't save the tip up, but will teach someone a lesson  ;D

I would think one of those orange sticks or drive way reflectors would work cheap and easy to haul out there just drill a hole with a ice anchor or drill bit and slip it in there

The 3' driveway reflectors as stated above work well. Another option is the thin fiberglass rods used for electric fence with a piece of reflector tape on the top. The PVC would work as well but would take up more room.

7 years ago I made some markers for what you are stating. Never had tip ups hit but close. 3' long x 1" x 3/16" maple sticks. Put black fabric flag on top to move in the wind aiding in seeing them. Size to your liking. Very light and work great. Black much more visible in snow under daylight conditions especially if sled is going fast. Hope this helps..

Thanks for the feedback!

Cinderblocks it is...LOL

Driveway reflectors seem to be the easiest and cheapest.  I'll post a pic of the direction I'm going.

I use orange cones that I  found at Walmart. $2.99 for four in the sporting goods. They are about 10" high and are easy to transport. If they can't see orange then you are in trouble any ways. I like the cinder idea ;D

Don't have that problem where I live, but when marking various things in the winter we always use the pink ribbon as well as reflectors. A small round reflector is very hard to see in a vast open space if you are not straight in line with it.. now add in going 30mph+ and you'll never see it in time. A 10" piece of pink marking ribbon tied to the top moving in the wind will be extremely visible.

My Grandpa told me to just mark it with a ice auger....... I'm not sure why I would want 4 ice augers.

Regrettably, I think most of the hit and run DBs are too high on "stuff" to see anything! I honestly believe they think they are flying in outer space, and there is nothing what so ever to run into!!!!  I like the concrete blocks....yes, heavy but!!!  Sadly YOU would be held liable if they hit it....ask me how I know!!!

I like the orange cones from big box,  6-8" high, sit on top, no hole to drill, heavy e ought to stay put, light enough to carry.  That is perfect in my book.  In blowing snow, the solid blob will stand out better than a thinner ribbon, pole or marker.  4 pack for the price of a couple driveway markers.  Add a strip of reflective tape to the top.

I put a driveway maker with flag on my box tip-up because a DNR officer almost run it over a few years back !

I guess that some SS wire hung (about 3' high) between two stout poles, in your spread might up set some people... They did this on the great lake for the plainer boards, when the word got out, the jets skies stop running over the gear...

I like the idea of the PVC pipes. You can also get some small pieces of rebar at Lowes to pound in the ice first. I also have a roll of yellow/caution tape I can string on the poles for added protection so the snowmobiles stay away. I think they scare the fish when they run near the tipups. When I get a bite, I always tell my son not to run near the tipups. On a funnynote, at the end of the run he slides near the last tip up. My buddy Chez said someday he is going to go in the lake and make a hole in one. ;D

Wooden dowel rods with the tip painted orange. So far I have never had one hit by a machine and I do not mark mine but I keep them close. It is not a good idea to have them spread out real far apart. Usually if the guys on sleds see you fishing they will try to avoid your area. With some sleds costing over 10K they don't want to run over your gear.

Never really had to worry about it til the other day. Ended up posting my heavy, bright yellow, spud in the ice right next to it.

A trip wire hooked to a flare gun will get their attention especially if it's aimed at them.  LOL
