Ice creation due to temps?
« on: Jan 04, 2015, 06:08 AM »
With a cold next week ahead of us, how much would thursday's forecast change the ice conditions? Isn't there a rule like 1 inch of ice for every hour of below zero? Next weekend almost everywhere should be locked  up given that forecast stays the same.

???/Brookie,   How much snow did you get.  In the Mountains we got 3 inches and it has sucked up all the rain so far.   tonight all of it will turn to white ice on top of  6 or 7 inches of good ice.   I think I may have to get out my heater and power auger ::)
Question now will be how to decide where and what to fish :o ???

I was thinking the same thing, as it rains today the snow will be saturated by the end of the day with rain and when it freezes it will become ice. Also I got about 2.5 inches pf snow hard to tell though because the rain has eaten a lot of it up.

we got a good 6-8 inches of snow w/an inch of crust on top . This will put some weight on top of the inch or two of ice in our area.Becareful with the extra load on thin ice. Temps look good for the next week to make some low grade ice.
There must be a twelve step program for this

Not a good one  ;)

Too many variables.

Keep a log for the waterbodies you fish and you will get a feeling for how the ice will form.  In the end the only rule you can trust is the one you mark on your chisel with a file.

Excellent page on ice formation. Great reference.  I have one of those tables but not along with all that information.
