What is the biological reason for some lakes to produce nice size panfish and other larger lakes like Otisco to have small 5-6 inchers?  Some small Lakes in Tully and Cortand that are just as heavily fished produce much larger fish.  Is it feed, genetics, over population, or all of the above?

From what I know I would say that it is because of over population

i am know bioligist but from what i see alot from being on many different lakes is if a lake isnt fished alot that the fish seem to stunt out i think that over population as alot of things to do with it,but the you have to also remember a lake can only produce so much food source ,just my 2 cents, bill

In Otisco overpopulation is a possibility,  in which case it would be nice if they'd stock a bunch more Tiger Musky.

But have you ever walked out on the ice and seen the size panfish that some of the people that fish it keep?    If they catch it they keep it, Ive seen them keep 4-5 inch gills some even smaller then that,  stuff that you are not going to geat any meat off of.    Ive seen people do this time after time.     They dont give the panfish a chance to grow up.     I know that there are some big gills in Otisco at leaste as Chucker caught one this year that was an honest 8 inches.    I would be really really interested in seeing a fisheries study, on this lake or any lake.    Sampling and the full nine yards to really see what is going on.

On lakes also food forage will have an effect on the size,   if there is not a lot of food for the panfish they will not grow as large, will jsut use what they can to put into the propogation of the species and whats left over to growth sometimes there is not too much left over.

There are a lot of factors that lead to growth or lack there of.
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.

the one word i would use is "BALANCE" for the biological reason some lakes
have better fishing then others.some of the FACTORS[LISTED BELOW]
1-P.H. OF THE WATER
2-OXYGEN LEVEL OF THE WATER
3-FOOD[forage what ever that may be]
4-SIZE OF THE BODY OF WATER
5-PRESSURE[FISHING,BOATING,OTHERS]
there are more
hope this helps

most panfish school up by size,do you fish the same part of the lake all
the time, talk to other fisherman and D.E.C. they run test on lakes all
the time, are the rest of the fish growing
I HAVE NOT FISH THIS LAKE YET
hope this helps

I think it has to do with the carrying capacity of the lake like in otisco .a lot of the other fish get by feeding on the little the perch and sunfish, but the sunfish prob don't have sufficient food sources to make them huge I think also that they are over populated so that they are all competing heavily for food . otisco you can easily fill a 5 gallon bucket of small sunfish in a day I think that shows just how hungry they are just my 2cents
