Pop up camper conversion registration?
« on: Oct 19, 2020, 06:02 AM »
Can anyone give me the low down on what it takes to register a pop up camper that has been converted into a bob house?

What do I need to get a registration? Is there an inspection?

Thanks for the help in advance. Looking forward to getting out with the family this year.

Should be the same as any trailer with the pop up camper numbers used.

I registered my wheelhouse as a homebuild trailer and just did a VIN verification as I had to get a VIN assigned.

No inspection assuming the weight is under 3000 pounds.  For registration, you will need a bill of sale and a VIN.

I believe the current NH law is if the trailer GVWR is below 10k lbs then it does not require any NH State inspection at any time.

Your pop up should already have a VIN and a GVWR. I would have to assume that GVWR is below 10k lbs. If so, in this case your best off registering it as if it were the original pop up. No one needs to know you modified it.

Inspection is required on trailers over 3000 pounds but I can't imagine an older pop up would gvw above that anyway...

I don't think so... I checked again this morning, all I can find is that trailers with a GVWR above 10k lbs needs to be inspected in NH. Unless they are used commercially, then they need to be inspected no matter what the GVWR is. My sled trailer has  GVWR of 7000k lbs, and I don't need to get it inspected.

Here is the statute:

266:1-b Inspection of Trailers, Exemptions. –
I. Notwithstanding any law or rule to the contrary, trailers of 10,000 pounds or less gross vehicle weight rating not used in interstate commerce shall be exempt from periodic vehicle inspection requirements, but shall be subject as other vehicles are to periodic roadside inspection by law enforcement officers to determine that they have the proper required and fully functional safety equipment.
II. The director may authorize properly qualified dealers holding utility dealer registrations to inspect trailers of more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, to determine whether they are fit to be driven, and to issue inspection stickers, under rules adopted for this purpose pursuant to RSA 541-A. This section shall not apply to full trailers as defined in RSA 259:37-a or semi-trailers as defined in RSA 259:98, and shall not prohibit other official inspection stations from inspecting trailers.

I didn't research it but the NHost unit provided to my shop by the NH DMV to conduct annual safety inspections affords the opportunity to inspect trailer in categories of 3000-10000 and 10000 pounds and above. It does not denote commercial or personal but I did at least a half dozen inspections on campers under 10000 this summer and a lot more than that in previous non-covid years, the NHost unit doesn't typically allow the issue of a sticker that is not required...
At the end of the day nobody on this forum is writing tickets so the OP should call the DMV if he wants answers instead of opinions...

I just had to question it myself because I have had snowmobile trailers for many years with GVWR of 7000lbs +/- and I never got an inspection. Was wondering if I had been breaking the law! But I'm pretty certain I am not. Also my boat trailer has a GVWR of 7000lbs as well and I have never got that inspected. Then again, I have never once been asked anything about the trailer I was pulling when I've gotten stopped. And last year I got stopped with both trailers! Speedy Gonzales!
