Iskwatikan or Oskikubuk
« on: Dec 17, 2014, 11:29 PM »
Planning on going up to cabin in march. Does anybody have any info on the fishing in these lakes?  Areas that are best?   Never fished either. It will be one or the other not both if I do go in. Coming in from the south on Iskwatikan. Through Thomas.
Thx for and advice

Your cabin is up at la ronge i am guessing??  I am pretty jealous of you right now having a cabin up there and access to either of those two lakes!! Thats awesome.

I haven't fished either of those lakes but i have read a lot about ice fishign at Oskikebuk on previous posts on this forum.  Everything i have read suggested the fishing was fantastic and pretty damn reliable.  Seems like Oskikebuk might be pretty damn far from la ronge though.  Im sure there are trails, seem to be a series of trails able to get you into almost any lake up in that area (wish i had a snowmobile and the time to do this all the time!).  I know a lot of people go to Oskikebuk from deschambault.

Im sure the fishing is probably pretty good considering the effort or money required to get into the lake. if i recall correctly Iskwatikan has lake trout?  That might be a facor to consider if you are interested in fishing for lakers.  Although maybe Oskikebuk has better walleye fishing.

Good luck wherever you decide!

osk is a great fishing lake, there is another just past it called brunell also which is excellent as well.
Its a good trip from desch lk area, and you will see some open water as the trail covers ground along the creek.

it is a really good adventure

Oskikibuck is a great lake for numbers.  Size of the fish has gone down the last 5 years or so i would say from the fishing pressure.  If you go in march, you have to watch the boundries for fishing.  After oskikibuck, the next lake is Alsmith and after that is brownell.  Alsmith is very good for fishing and you won't see near the fishermen.  It is a smaller lake so it is an easy fish.  Brownell is huge and we have fished it a few times with very poor luck.  I would not recommend fishing it unless you have  a day to kill.

In march the trails are very rough and so is the lake usually so depending on your group age and sleds, older crews usually don't like fishing this lake the second day and especially not the 3rd day because it is a hard ride.

I would be going down to fox point on LA and then up through the narrows on wappawekka. How is that route?  One guy was telling me it can be a dangerous river system??

Ben Lucky hit the mark. Its a rough ride in any time of year. Make sure your sleds are in good shape. We have in the past stashed our gear overnight on the lake shore so that we dont have to pull the sleighs every day, we have not had any issues so far and it makes the ride  back and forth alot quicker. The portages are quite hard on rear bumpers and hitches as well. It is an adventure that is worth it. We are going to try Alsmith as well this year. Have to give a nod to Deschambault Lake Lodge, always have a good stay there, clean and friendly.

We leave our gear on the lake as well.  We dont bother stashing it though.  Just leave it sit right where we were fishing with everything in it.  It has been 15 yrs and about 35 trips and nothing has ever bee stolen.  Caught a guy returning our chain saw one year though.  He borrowed it and used it and was returning it as we pulled around the corner.
Everything is there to be used as long as you respect it and return it.  Just like the cabin up there with the food on the table.  Note says,"if you need it use it, next trip return it."

I've done around 12 fly in trips to iskwatikan and am very familiar with the lake in the summer. I've always thought it would be  cool to ice fish it but haven't had the opportunity yet. I could suggest a few spots to try. Have fished Thomas a couple times as well and have caught some nice sized pike there in the summer.

do you know if people use this route? I've always been curious about this. I heard it can be done but i don't know anyone who has done it. Would like to do it just for fun one day
