I have 2 also.  my original 3+ years old stays lit after 30 seconds of holding the gas button in(not sure of the real term).  my newest one(2 months old) requires me to hold that button in 3-5 minutes before it will stay lit.  Sorry I can't help, but understand your pain as well.

Try elevating the unit off the ice. I've found that it helps mine a lot

May need a cleaning. Spider webs, dust, dirt particles will be all it takes to make gas burners malfunction.

You are holding the Pilot in after it lights for around 20-30 seconds right? I hold mine in for about 20-25 Seconds and it is fine.

It sounds like you're not getting enough gas to the pilot light.  The flame should be long enough to touch the flame sensor.  A good cleaning might just do the trick.

Another note if your using a larger tank be sure to use a filter and/or the "green hose" . The hoses have a tendency to break down and gum up the inner workings  of the heater .

Gut it, ie. take all the safety features out of it. Couldn't get mine to lite when it was bitter cold so that's what I did and have never had a problem since.

there is a youtube vide on how to clean these....compressor or canned air and q tips is all you should need.  Most of the time this process makes them work like new.

I had the same problem(s)....I even took one back to the store because of this problem..   I agree with the youtube suggestions but I just grabbed a can of computer air and it worked great.  blow the tube out and the ceramic off and it should work.  I not carry a can of air with me.  I do think it would benefit to get it up off the ice a few inches-maybe built a little platform for it????
