Taxidermist for Replica Mounts?
« on: Dec 14, 2014, 08:25 PM »
Any taxidermist recommendations for quality replica mounts? I'd like to be able to send a few photos and measurements and have a lifelike mount done. And would like to stay with a full-time Wyoming taxidermist with replica experience. Second choice would be a Montana pro with experience and referral from a satisfied customer. Would like to hear from MountainMan on this as well! Thanks!

Although the place does not meet either of your requirements, Artistic Anglers in Duluth, MN is way hard to beat.

I'm not against going elsewhere per se, although I would like to do business with a quality Wyoming studio. Support the Locals, you know? Have you had any work done for yourself by Artistic Anglers?

What species?

When it comes to taxidermy most ask for quality but mean cheap. 99.99999999 to infinity% of people on planet earth only know the later.  It has always amazed me as to what the GP thinks quality taxidermy is. Please do yourself a favor if you have never had any work done before and educate yourself.

Most taxidermist are only going to order your fish already painted, have it shipped, unpack it and give you a call saying its done and mark up the price of the wholesale job costs. That's just how it is these days. There are still a few that do their own fish work but are far and few between and I would say most lack "quality" but are cheap enough to get you in the door. Also the nature of the beast is a taxidermist will quote you a price then shop suppliers for the cheapest wholesale guy to do it for them complete and you will be stuck with what was shipped because there is absolutely no quality control with third parties and most often your taxidermist cannot fix any issues should you not agree with the products outcome. Also I am willing to guarantee your pictures will never leave the taxidermists place of business you are dealing with so the wholesale painter has no reference of your fish. It just does not happen.

I think most would rather see people take an awesome picture USING A FLASH, YES EVEN IN DAY LIGHT and then have it blown up, matted and framed instead of looking at a bad mount.

Natures Design in Cody as far as I knew does not have, nor have they ever had a fish taxidermist working there and will probably do whats mentioned above.

There is a gentleman in Billings Montana that is one of the best in the world at fish. I would recommend anyone at least physically going up there and check out his work so you know what "quality" actually looks like before wasting any money on a lesser job. I can get his info and pm it to you tomorrow if you would like.

Cheers!
Houligan

Might think about getting someone to carve it out of wood. Guy in Cheyenne does it and they look real nice. Something different.

yeah the guy want to make the fish look like you just caught it, here are a couple more he finished a golden, a laker for his dad, and a cutthroat for his bother, all of them replicas, the golden was the hardest for him to find a blank for after talking to him about it.
