Very shallow water fishing ??????
« on: Nov 30, 2014, 07:35 PM »
This early in the year I fish very shallow water, for brook trout. The ice is only about 4 inches and the water depth is usually less then a foot.  I raise my polor tip ups center sections but this causes the flag to be at such an angle.  I was wondering if anyone has made or manufactured a  flag spring height extension to relocate the flag to its original horizontal position?  Am I going to far in my thinking ?  I always want to build a better mouse trap.  I just use the tip ups at the beginning of the year because there is little or no snow on the ice.  Heritage otherwise.  Any ideas?? Thanks.

I’ve seen pictures of guys putting a tip-up in a bottomless bucket above the hole. I guess freeze up might be the issue, but you could cover the bucket around the trap with stryo. I believe I saw a post about it on this site a year or so ago.

Get some old fashioned traps where everything is above the ice.

you could try this

drape the mono over the flag, its an extremely sensitive spring bobber, works great in a crappie bite, would work for brookies as well

All you need are tip downs, check em out.

A stick. A clothes hanger and a handful of line in a slip knot. The fish slips the knot, runs out the line and the wire tips down stops the run and usually sets the hook.

With 4 inches, you don't need to fish shallow, 4 inches is plenty of ice

i like the idea of the line stopping, nothing worse than having a fish on that took too much line and wrapped around a shallow log or boulder. maybe i could add the rubber band trick to my setup to stop that
