Early Ice
« on: Jan 04, 2015, 10:39 AM »
Remember to keep your picks where you can get them. Their useless half way up your coat sleeves. Take a life vest, you can always take it off. Have an augar, spud, 2x2 or stick in hand, you don't go thru as far and helps getting out. And don't make beelines to other guys already on the ice, check for yourself as you go. And early clear snowless ice is the best time plumb new places. You can see where the weedlines, breaks and points begin and with a water bottle and vex you get good readings thru the ice when it gets deeper.

Best way to prepare yourself is to go jump in some fridgid open water right now,I have done it with a couple of my freinds and it really is a shocking experience but a good lesson learned!!

Don't forget a length of rope.  I always tie about 20' or so to my sled and then drag it a good distance behind me.  I figure this way I've got les weight with me and if I did go through there's a way for my buddy to pull me out.  I'll be out in a couple of days when we have 3" or more.

The lake was singing tonight so I wouldn't be surprised by better than 5" this weekend.  It would be nice, though, if snow avoids us.  I really love fishing black ice!

Unless the forecast changed we're only supposed to get 1-2" and it should be that light fluffy snow. Maybe with a little help from mother nature the wind will blow most of it off the ice.
