Off the Subject of Ice Fishing
« on: Nov 21, 2014, 03:41 PM »
Hey guys, I know there's a bit of ice out there but it really is early so I thought I'd stir up a little discussion about walleye fishing like on the St. Joseph River.  Has anyone done very good up that way around the Elkhart area.  I have a 14 ft. jon boat and 9.9 Evinrude to push it around.  I do know a very BIG walleye was caught up there either last year or the year before through the ice.  Just thought we could have a bit of discussion about this is all.

Lots of walleye in the stretch of river between johnson st dam in elkhart and twin branch dam in Mishawaka.  I don't fish for them as I am not a walleye guy, but know guys who do and they catch a lot of fish.  There are some big ones in there too.  The water up by the dam on Johnson street can be treacherous and has been knows to ruin lots of props and lower units.  There are also some skinny water flats you have to cross before you even get up to the dam area, so go slow until you know where the right 'path' is thru there.

WaxWorm, That is great info bud.  I'll remember that and my buddy and I will try to get up there next year.  Much closer than Maumee, Ohio.  We're just looking for something closer to home and I've seen some of the hogs that have come out of there.   If I'm not mistaken, a state record came out of there last year or the year before.  If not a state record, it came close.

Rico, If they are it's usually down around the mouth of the Eel river where it dumps into the Wabash.  I catch a lot of walleye out of the Wabash in the middle of summer across the river from my house.  There's a spring over there about 100 yds back into the woods.  When that river temp reaches the high 70's I start catching the eyes at the mouth.  This year was a little slow.  A good friend of mine catches bunches of walleye up in Peru and especially at the mouth of the Mississinewa River where it dumps into the Wabash.  I just would like to try a different river and see what happens.   It's hard to get a boat up and down the Wabash in this area because it's so shallow.
