Waterproofing?
« on: Nov 18, 2014, 03:26 PM »
Might be a bit wet and snowy this weekend.  Wondering what you all use for a good water-proofer.  I have used Nikwax the last two years and had good luck for the ice suite, but what about the tent?  Any relatively cheap suggestions that work well?

Nice!  I read on another area to make sure you get silicone base when purchasing waterproofing spray, but it also mentioned a separate seam sealer.  I think I will just take what I have from Wally-World and spray my stuff down right after work today, much like you did.

Just looked up that separate seam sealer and it is made specifically for waterproofing sewn joints in tents.  Probably worth buying a small tube, people say it works great.

OK, took care of all the waterproofing yesterday, including seam sealer.  We will see how it works over the wet weekend, the 3M tent spray I got seemed to spray and dry well, but a word of caution if anyone uses seam sealer to apply from the top so it drips into the seam cracks, and carry a moist towel while applying to take care of any drips.  I over applied it in a couple areas and there is a slight chalky discolor, but should still be nice and water tight.

Once again I used the Nikwax two part system this year to wash and waterproof my Frabill ice suite.  Water is beading off of it better than when it was brand new.  Make sure if anybody does this method they wash the suit first with the Nikwax Tech Wash, then in a sink or bucket (not washing machine) soak with the directed TX.Direct wash-in and air dry.  I do it once a year and my suit stays nice and water resistant.

Cheers

Our tents are gonna get put to the test this weekend, so we'll see if i get any leakage at the seems without the seam sealer vs. yours with it. Fishon1 just did his qf3 with the silicone spray tonite. Then we put the new gaskets in my leaky carb on the mag2000. We'll see how that fairs tonite  :-\ either way we're taking fishon1's for the trip  @)

Of course right after we did this I found out that a lot of people swear by the Rust-Oleum Neverwet product.  I read somewhere on a thread yesterday that it is phenomenal stuff, next year I will give that a try.
