Recommendations for Pike Ice Rod/Reel
« on: Nov 06, 2014, 10:27 AM »
hello just looking for your thoughts on the best "off the shelf" (no custom set ups) ice combo for pike.  I'm not hard core and my local options are limited but I want at least one set up in my sled this year for jigging pike.  Thank you for your comments.  I will say I'm partial to St. Croix but I'm open to suggestion.

Bring up the website for Swish rods. That's what I use. They're classics. Simple and Tonka tough.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Mine is a 32" MH Berkeley Lightning rod. It is a standard baitcast style rod. It works great paired with my abu garcia ambassadeur 5500c and 20# power pro. You don't need such a nice reel, but I already have it on my summer rod. If you are more on a budget, I think a spinning set up would be better, assuming you don't have a reel in mind. St. Croix makes a few MH ice rods. Medium action is a little light for pike. You really wan't the stronger rod for two reasons. One, it sets hooks better in the bony mouth of a pike. Two, it absorbs head shakes better. Heavy would work too, but would be overkill for most pike, and you might loose a little lure action with some lures. The Mackinaw series rods would be ideal because they have spiral wraped guides on their baitcasting rods, but cost a lot more. For length, its what you prefer. The reel will be more important than the rod. The main thing to look for is a very smooth drag. You can get a reel thats known for performance like the ambassadeur or president (spinning). I replace all my drag washers with carbontex drag washers and it will improve any reel.

Bang for you buck the Ice Slammer Rod from Icehopper. I was told there is four new models coming out this year. They had 40 heavy last year I am pretty sure it was $20.00 . I have a couple of the lights and a ML and a MH and I love them!!! ;D. Franks great outdoors I know carries atleast one of the models and Sportsmen's Direct usually has all their models. Might want to check out SDI's website.

thanks for the suggestions.  looks like I have some research to do.  I should have noted that I'm probably looking at a spinning combo vs. baitcaster or other options. i'm thinking my stradic 2500 Ci4 will be my pike reel with some fireline or Power pro.  I've handled 36" pike on an older stradic of mine that was a 1000 series so I'm not sure if that will be my go to or the 2500.  Thanks again.

One of my setups I have with a really old st. Croix Rod that has a 1000 Shimano that I put braid on and it does the job just fine for the avg like people run into. If your trophy hunting a casting setup might be worth the look. I got an old berkley casting Rod with a low profile reel on it and it does the trick when I am hunting the bigger guys
