Waterhen Lake and around
« on: Mar 07, 2014, 06:40 AM »
So I just found out that I am headed to Waterhen Lake for work, staying at Tawaw Cabins, and its looking like I'm going to have time to fish. Ill be out there May 25 ish through June 11 ish. I didn't know if it was worth trying to fish or not. I understand there is big pike in the lake but Ive never fished for pike so I don't have a clue. what kind of gear should I plan on, flies, spinning, trolling? Is there any place for trout in the area? Any information will help.

waterhen is great for pike, fished it tons when I was a kid, honestly u could throw anything out and troll and catch pike, I remember using a lot of rapala rattlin raps and them working well.

That's prime time fishing there.  You will do excellent if you do your homework.  I fish there all the time.

Pike are a hugely aggressive fish that will bite almost anything. If you are casting or trolling you probably won't need any kind of bate. Pike are ambush predators, so fish in a spot close to shore where there would be lots of potential hiding places (Reids, shore over groth, or lots of weeds) Good luck

For more fun, use a topwater bait, buzzbait or frog.

That time last year I crushed it.  Wake up early and beat the crowd and you can pick and choose the fish you want to keep species and size.

Fished there the last 2 weekends and did really good.  Good numbers and ok size.  My 5 year old pulled in a 12 lb Johnny on a tip up with a slater and herring after his grandpa set the hook for him.  New PB for the little dude.  One of my proudest moments to date as a dad.  He told me ,"Look at the size of that big guy,". Not sure who had the bigger smile!   ;D

One a unrelated note I didn't lose many fish with the slaters compared to quick strikes or pike hooks. Was almost 100% hook up rate with the slaters and probably 60% with the quick strikes and even less with the pike hooks.
