Never Again....
« on: Dec 27, 2005, 10:06 PM »
Well i was anxious to get on some ice and try to do some ice fishing...... Well i decided at first to look at shaker heights in wolcott.  Fishing was slow and ice was low..  A solid 4 to 5 inches.  But still scetchy.  So i decide to take a gander over to port bay.  Fishing was great.  I ended up with about 2 dozen 10-12 inchers.  I was excited coming off the ice at about 12:30.  And before i knew it, i was under the ice.  I have always told myself i plan on growing up and having kids.  and today i didnt think i was going to make it.  God bless my cousin who had cut the rope from the sled to throw to me.  Guys The ice is shaky.  Stay on top.  Im only 16 years old and it was by far the scariest moment of my life.  No fish is worth your life.  Tight lines every one. My suggestion is to wait for a little freeze....  and from this day forward. You wont see me unless their is 6+ inches of solid ice. The ice was 3-4 today.  NEVER AGAIN...

Wow! Glad you're ok, perchslayer. Your story is a very good reason to always have someone with you on the ice.
We all know that there are inherent dangers to this sport, but it rings home when one of us actually takes that plunge...

I too am glad you are ok! It is scary stuff and many an ice fisherman has stopped fishing hardwater having fallen in.   I remember last year they had a good post on safety for such a thing.  I carry all the safety stuff, for me an others, but I also have 1/2 gallon clorox bottle filled with sand part way on my rope. It allow me to throw it on the ice and slide it to the person and if the wind is up it slides pretty good on the ice.  Since it if only half full it also floats. If I get it close I can move the rope.  I learned that in Canada. Have not had to use it, and hope I don't ever have to. As a rule and a promise to my wife, in early and late ice I don't bring my kids, don't fish alone and always wear my preserver just in case.

Glad you are ok, and good luck. Hope this does not kill your fishing, but it was good to share for all of us to be more careful. Thanks for sharing.

GLAD TO HEAR YOURE OK !
THANKS FOR YOURE STORY ... IT A REAL WAKE-UP CALL FOR ALL OF US AND IT REMINDS US IT CAN HAPPEN TO ALL OF US AND SAFETY SHOULD ALWAYS BE FIRST !
I KNOW I CARY A LOT OF THINGS LIKE ROPE AND A FLOATING SEAT CUSHION TOO AND A COUPLE OF MY ICE PARTNERS GIVE ME A HARD TIME ABOUT IT BECAUSE OF THE ADDED WEIGHT AND BULK BUT IT WILL BE THERE IF ONE OF MY FELLOW ICE FISHING ENTHUSIESTS GO THROUGH AND THEN WHO WILL BE THE FOOL FOR CARRYING THE EXTRAS !
THE IMPORTANT THING IS DONT LET WHAT YOU LEARNED ABOUT THE ICE CONDITIONS AND DONT LET THIS UNFORTUNATE LESSON STEER YOU FROM THIS GREAT SPORT .
GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND SAFE ICE

I knew a pike fisherman who had fallen in the flow in Sodus and popped up in the lake, after traveling under the ice for 40-50 feet!  and that was the "second" time he had fallen in!! :o  I think I may wear the old PFD for a while as discussed on another thread.

Very glad you are OK, never want to do that myself but the threat always exists. This should be a lesson to all, ice thickness itself is NOT a measure of safety. If the ice was 3-4 inches of black ice and not mushy white ice full of air, it probably would not have happened. Always bring a spud and poke along the way. You can poke right through with one poke if the ice is soft, black ice will not poke through 4 inches in one poke. It is warm right now people, relatively speaking, find some open water to fish and don't push it! If we hurt or kill ourselves, people tend to not want us on the ice after that and close places to ice fishing!! Cannot stress enough, glad you are OK Perchslayer.....

Also, 3-4" in some spots is 1-2" in others. I'll never icefish anywhere that is over 4-5' deep when the ice is less than 5-6" thick.  I just don't feel safe when the next step I take is on 1" of ice and I'm taking a swim in 30' of water. As the previous post noted, a spud would be priceless.
Glad your ok and don't let it get you down(no pun intended), Scott

Glad things worked out OK. It's just not worth the risk when the weather has been this funky. Better off gettin' some oakleaf grubs or huntin' bunnies. I don't much care for fishin on anything less than 6". We always carry rope tied to a PFD with a big loop of rope at the PFD end. Picks are always there too. There was a video clip posted on a few boards a while back about what to do, how to survive, a cold water, through the ice immersion. I suggest that anyone who still wants to get out on the ice to review it. Could be a lifesaver. STAY SAFE.

perchslayer glad you made it safely!

we all talk about our vexilars and snow machines and fancy tipups and jigs
hand spikes, PFD's , ropes etc etc are the best investment you can make when looking at icefishing gear!

be safe out there on early ice use a spud bar.. pay attention...
be sure of the ice you head out on

Perchslayer, i'm glad you are ok. I hate to repeat what others had said but, ice thickness has nothing to do with safe-ice.
I know, i have broke through quite a few times. I have fished 1&1/2 and 2 inches of ice (under special conditions) quite a few times and felt safe and knew i would not break through. Every time i have broke through the ice was 4 to 13 inches thick. I get real nervous with thick rotten ice and use a spud and carry floating life picks.
What we really need is -0 degree weather :)
Take care

I agree with utes and crappieloo.  Thickness of ice does not guarantee safety.  I've had more problems with thick late ice than I've had with skinny early ice.  One important point that hasn't been mentioned:  If you do go through in still water, you will probably go in only armpit deep.  Before you try to get out of the hole, turn 180 degrees (front to back, not head over heels) so that you're facing the gear you have been pulling.  Now pull yourself up and out. This way you'll be climbing onto the last sound ice you walked on, instead of flopping forward onto the questionable.
