Ice conditions help!
« on: Feb 18, 2014, 04:10 PM »
OK so this weekend i want to fish at one of my local ponds with 3in of white ice and 11in of black ice. But there is 3 days of rain on the way and im wondering if it will hold up for the weekend? I live in Voluntown. Any predictions if it will be safe or not?

It should be safe enough to drive your car on.

The rain should help actually. Get all the snow and slush into water then freeze it back up later that week. You can fish during that time if you don't mind getting your boots wet.

I'm with you NorthEast hopefully this snow gets knocked down and refreezes next week. They are saying temps struggling to make it to the 20s later next week.

Should be plenty of ice.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Great year for ice,  this rain will help knock the snow down I hope and turn into white ice come the cold snap next week.  I hope,   Making it nice for travel.     As long as we don't get another foot of snow, next week should be good travel on the snow.

once this snow pack melts and refreezes we may have close to 18" of ice on some lakes/ponds.  I may have to start renting out my Jiffy once my holes are drilled ! @)

any idea what the depth is on your auger?  I wonder at what point you would need an extension.

This will be the first in many years I have actually wondered about that. There is very thick ice on some of the bodies of water I hit. I am loving it.

I actually had to use an extension once up in ME back in the early 90's back in my college days. Had to stand on the tail gate so you were up high enough to get it started  ;D!!!  I was about 6 inches away from bottoming out up at the Winni derby 2 weeks ago.  A buddy of mine, new to ice fishing actually got pulled into the first hole he drilled. ::)  Gave new meaning to flooding the motor.  It flash froze and actually had to put it next to a fire to get it thawed out and running again.  I would say you are pushing the limits of a standard auger around 30".

Ive drilled through around 20 before without an extension on my old Mora, but it was getting close. You have to get on your knees toward the end.

Just drilled 20" last weekend on a pond in Maine with my nils. I could have used the extension. Bending over when drilling is not easy on the back. I was impressed with how quick the nils went through the ice.
