Only problem with screwing directly into the sole of the boot is, after fishing if you still have your gear on, going inside bait shops, hotels, eateries, etc........Sure you can take them off, but not as easily removable as strap ons.
True. However that yaktracks I have get all froze and the strap won't come off anyhow. Screws are my preference by far. Not for everyone but are for me. Good luck

For several years I have used LaCrosse brand rubber overshoes that come with the spikes already in them.  They work great and if you look around they are about $110.  I used to have mickey mouse boots with sheet mail screws in them and I think the overshoes work just as well, plus you can wear you comfortable shoes under them till you get to the lake.

Tried out my new Kahtoola micro spikes for the first time yesterday, they are some great cleats.  I was very impressed.

Screws are great until you go into the local coffee joint and tear up their hardwood floor, or walk on concrete and skid, breaking your hip. My favorites were carbide cleats made by Get-A-Grip. Easy on, easy off, less than $30 a pair, and last for years. Frabill has a similar set up, retailing around $10, if you can find them in stock. Perfect for the wind blown, slick ice I always seem to be on.

sheet metal screws in a pair of "fishing only" boots is the best I ever used. I think I put 9 in each boot and changed them when they got dull.  Now I'm doing slip ons and they are a pita.  This thread makes me think that a new pair of fishing only boots could be cheaper than a torn rotator cuff or broken a$$.  Good luck out there

X2 - that's what I use, screws in the boots.  I always put my gear on when I get to the ice access, so doing damage to anyone's floor is a non-issue.

Been wearing the same pac boots with sheet metal screws for 6 or 7 years now. I do not drive with them on, changing into tennis shoes when I come off the ice. I could wear them, but they get too hot. They work great on the ice and are very cheap to replace when dull.

You could work on your balance. And eating 5 patty cheeseburgers, which may be contributing to a bit of top heaviness.
