2011 Jiffy Problem
« on: Apr 22, 2012, 01:27 PM »
I have a 2010 or '11 Jiffy 30XT and it doesn't want to run when I do not have the choke on and I press the throttle... If i don't move the choke to halfway, it'll die when I give it gas.  I have broken it in, I let it warm up, I drill holes with it, used recommended oil/fuel mix, etc. but it needs the choke!  It has the gas cap with a tiny hole in it, not the older ones that screw open/close for more air.  I tried taking the cap off completely, but that didn't do anything to fix the problem.  I see lots of other tips of adjusting the two screws on the carb, but I do not see them at all on mine (maybe because it's newer?).  Anyone have any tips other than the quintessential getting rid of it for a nils, eskimo, strikemaster, or whatever, because none of those are options for me.  Is there only one screw on the newer models?  If so, which one is it?  I can post pics of it if need be but just wanted to know if someone out there could point me in the direction of what will adjust the carb.  Thanks

Here's the pics of the carb after I remove the air cleaner assembly....

Here's the front with the air cleaner assembly off:

This is the left side:

This is the right side:

There is nothing on the bottom to screw in/out....  hope the pics help me with an answer!

With the ethanol in the gas nowadays, it can go bad and sludge up a carb in less then 90 days ! I would find some seafoam additive, NAPA carries it. Pour a couple of shot glasses worth of the seafoam in the tank along with some fresh gas and mix. It has Naptha in it and it will loosen the gum and vanish and free up the float needle and let in the proper amount of fuel so it doesn't starve like it is doing now !

I'll try using Seafoam tomorrow.  When I look at your diagram, I don't see that I have the H and L screws... Do I and I'm just missing them completely!??

You either have a crankcase leak or some other intake prob, or your carb is too lean. If Surf's pics had part #'s, I might be able to tell you which one to bend/tweak/replace,,,   :P

That is the new Chinese Zama Carb, it most likely doesn't have the mixing screws, EPA took care of that handy feature !  >:( If that is a 2011, you might still be under the warranty. On the new Jiffys, they usually just swap out carbs till they find one that will work. My buddy Ralph is a Jiffy service dealer and thats what jiffy has him do when he runs into carb issues on the new ones ! Here is a link to a parts diagram of your zama carb with the parts list with rebuild instructions and no, there are no hi or lo speed adjustment screws on that carb ! Good luck, I hope this helps.

P.S. I'll strive to do better for ya nor easter, I'm pretty sure these links has every think you need !   ;)2 :roflmao:

I know it's under warranty---bought it in November 2011 and it was a demo.  I appreciate the help and will get a hold of Jiffy--- I just was hoping there was an adjustment I could make on it without having to get it serviced.  Thanks guys!

I e-mailed Jiffy on Sunday to see what they would say.  I got a response early Monday morning which was great turnaround time!  Anyway, I copy and pasted his response---

"This is okay.  You can run the engine on half choke.  Your engine needs more gas than what the carb is set for.  It may be due to the weather or elevation.  You can not adjust the carb."

Hmm, That is definately an Interesting response ?? I guess the only problem with that is it increases fouled plugs and build up carbon deposits inside the engine ! Jiffy really used to be one of the Best ice auger companies out there, Amazing just how far they have fallen !!

I was thinking the same thing... if it's starving for fuel, why would they use that carb?!  I'm going to take it to a local Jiffy service dealer to see what he says.

Zama make a RC2 Rotary Valve Carburetor that Has 4 different bore sizes of 10.5mm, 12.2mm, 13.5mm, and 15.0mm. I'd bet good money if you could go up just one or 2 bore sizes at the most, that jiffy would run like a Champ !

The jet is located under a black rubber cap that is right in the middle of the pivot area where the throttle moves.
In the (centre pic above) or The Left side pic there is a little black rubber cap in the centre of the brass screw with the slot , pop that black cap out & you can use an eyeglass flat screwdriver & turn counter clockwise slightly to richen.

Thanks for the reply blue! I'm going to try that this weekend! Have you had to do the same thing? Never did get it serviced or switched out because it runs fine.

I had a lot of trouble with mine from the day I bought it, I changed the carb & still hard to start & stall then I found the fuel lines were cracked inside the fuel tank, I use Amsoil 100/1 mix & CRC Phase Guard 4 to protect E10 to E85 fuel against phase separation the number one cause of ethanol fuel related problems. Protects all gas-powered two- and four-cycle engines from corrosion, cleans the entire fuel system, stabilizes fuel and restores power & I've richen it up just a tiny bit & now it runs great.
